Look Who’s at the Head of the Class

Take one look at it and you think you know what you’re dealing with – a lean, mean street machine that’s built for wicked speed. Okay, that much is true, but let’s not forget the “lean” part, because we know you want to burn as little fuel as possible while you’re burning rubber.

The 2011 Ford Mustang GT, powered by a new 412-hp 5.0-liter V-8 engine, adds yet another notch to its belt: an EPA rating of 26 mpg highway when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, giving it the best fuel economy in its class.

With the six-speed manual transmission, Mustang GT coupe is rated at 17 mpg city and 26 highway, while models with the available six-speed automatic achieve 18 mpg city and 25 highway.

The GT’s best in class fuel numbers come on the heels of the Mustang V-6, which just last week cracked the record books as not only the most fuel-efficient Mustang ever, but also the first production car in history to produce 305 horsepower and 31 mpg highway

Mustang GT is powered by an all-new 5.0-liter double-overhead-camshaft (DOHC) V-8 with a host of advanced features to deliver the combination of power and class-leading fuel economy.

Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds depending on driver inputs. A carefully tuned intake and exhaust system ensures free breathing at all engine speeds. And all-aluminum construction results in a lightweight yet durable powerplant.

A pair of new transmissions, both with six forward ratios, also play a large part in making the 2011 Mustang a breakthrough car. Regardless of whether drivers want to shift for themselves or let the car shift for them, they’re treated to carefully chosen gear ratios to maximize fuel economy while still delivering high-horsepower performance

Fuel economy improvements on all Mustang models

Mustang GT shares fuel economy accolades with the new 3.7-liter Mustang V-6 – the first production car ever to offer both 300-plus horsepower and 31 mpg on the highway. Official 2011 EPA fuel economy ratings for the Mustang product line are:

Mustang V-6

  • 19 mpg city and 31 highway (automatic coupe)

  • 19 mpg city and 29 highway (manual coupe)

Mustang GT

  • 18 mpg city and 25 highway (automatic coupe)

  • 17 mpg city and 26 highway (manual coupe)

In addition to powertrain improvements, upgrades to Mustang’s body and chassis design contribute to its 2011 performance. Examples include:

  • New EPAS eliminates the drag of an engine-operated hydraulic power steering pump

  • Combined with the new six-speed transmissions, standard 3.31 (manual) and 3.15 (automatic) rear axle ratios provide an ideal blend of relaxed cruising rpm and all-out acceleration

  • Aerodynamic improvements include a new front fascia on the Mustang GT, tire spats on the rear wheels, modified underbody shields, a taller air dam and an added rear decklid seal

The 2011 Mustang is built at the AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich., and goes on sale this spring.

Quotes

“The 2011 Mustang continues to exceed expectations in every category, and these fuel economy numbers are another chapter in an incredible story. To offer this kind of horsepower and class-leading fuel economy in a comfortable, beautiful, tech-savvy and affordable package – it’s really unprecedented.”

– Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s Group Vice President, Global Product Development

“Mustang powertrain development has reached a point where customers don’t have to choose between fuel efficiency and performance. Thanks to technologies like Ti-VCT and our six-speed gearboxes, a Mustang driver has the best of both worlds.”

– Barb Samardzich, Ford Vice President of Global Powertrain Engineering

Pony Up on Fuel Economy

Yin and Yang have converged in a perfect union today. The 2011 Ford Mustang has become not only the most fuel-efficient Mustang ever, but also the first production car in history to produce more than 300 horsepower and more than 30 mpg highway.

The Mustang’s official EPA ratings – completed this week – certify that models equipped with the 305-hp 3.7-liter V-6 and available six-speed automatic transmission achieve 31 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city. The standard six-speed manual transmission is rated at 29 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city.

Mustang is powered by a lightweight, all-aluminum 3.7-liter dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) V-6 engine that uses advanced engineering to deliver its combination of power and economy. Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds depending on driver inputs, further contributing to the engine’s overall efficiency.

The fact that Mustang achieves its top fuel economy rating with the convenience of an automatic transmission also marks a shift in conventional wisdom. Ford engineered a modern six-speed automatic transmission with carefully calibrated gear ratios and shift programs to maximize economy, while still delivering high-horsepower driving fun.

In addition to engine improvements, upgrades to Mustang’s body, powertrain and chassis design contribute to the higher fuel economy numbers for 2011. Examples include:

  • New Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system eliminates the drag of an engine-operated hydraulic power steering pump

  • Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions allow lower cruising revs without sacrificing off-the-line performance

  • Aerodynamic changes include improvements like a new front fascia, tire spats on the rear wheels, modified underbody shields, a taller air dam and an added rear decklid seal

The new 2011 Mustang already has more than 11,000 orders. Half of all the nationwide orders are for the car’s fuel-efficient 3.7-liter V-6 engine. The 2011 Mustangs are also being equipped with record levels of technology, giving customers the option of choosing navigation, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and rearview cameras.

The new 2011 Mustang goes on sale this spring and will be built at the AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

Quotes

“The Mustang engineering team aimed high and, through hard work, achieved fuel economy numbers that elevate Mustang into a class by itself.”

– Derrick Kuzak, Ford Group Vice President, Global Product Development

“At no other time in Mustang’s history – for that matter, in automotive history – have we been able to talk about 305 horsepower and 31 miles per gallon. The Mustang truly is a no-compromises sports car.”

– Derrick Kuzak, Ford Group Vice President, Global Product Development

“Advanced powertrains like our Ti-VCT V-6 and six-speed automatic really speak to the future of Mustang. We’ve proven that, using technology, Ford can deliver both power and fuel economy.”

– Barb Samardzich, Ford Vice President of Global Powertrain Engineering

Another Reason Why Cleveland Rocks

Think this nation needs a new engine of growth? Done and done.

Ford Motor Company is investing $155 million and adding 60 jobs at its Cleveland operations to build a new fuel-efficient V-6 engine for the 2011 Mustang, which has expected class-leading highway fuel efficiency of 30 miles per gallon on the highway and 305 horsepower.

The investment and jobs at Ford’s Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1 brings the company’s investment in powertrain engineering and facility upgrades in North America to $1.8 billion to support its 2011 vehicle launches – with more to come. The total number of jobs being added as part of these investments is 1,260. The new Mustang engine is one of nine new or upgraded engines or transmissions for 2011 model Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

On sale this spring, the 2011 Ford Mustang delivers 305 high-performance horses for V-6 coupe buyers. The all-aluminum dual-overhead cam (DOHC), 3.7-liter Duratec 24-valve V-6 engine delivers a projected 30 mpg on the highway with a six-speed automatic transmission and fun for drivers on nearly every road.

Also available for the 2011-model year are the Mustang GT – with an all-new 5.0-liter V-8 delivering 412 horsepower and projected unsurpassed highway mileage of 25 mpg – and a no-compromises Shelby GT500 powered by a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 and 550 horsepower.

The new 3.7-liter V-6 is built at Ford’s Cleveland Engine Plant 1. The 5.0-liter V-8 engine is built at Ford’s Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario. The 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 is built at Ford’s Romeo, Mich., Engine Plant.

Cleveland Engine Plant 1 Retooled
Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1’s V-6 engine is expected to represent two-thirds of Mustang’s volume this calendar year.

Ford’s $155 million investment there includes $121 million in manufacturing investment at the plant and $34 million for launch and engineering. Sixty new jobs have been added to the plant to support the new engine.

Specifically, the $121 million for the manufacturing facility supports continued investment in developing and re-tooling the plant’s flexible manufacturing systems in the assembly and component (cylinder block, head and crankshaft) areas.

Ford’s investment at Cleveland Engine Plant is supported by Ford’s green partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy. This Ohio plant is one of 11 Ford facilities in the U.S. participating in the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentives Program initiated by Congress and implemented by the Obama administration. The program is helping to develop advanced technology vehicles and strengthen American manufacturing across the country. This project is also supported by Ford’s state and local government partners primarily through training funds.

The investment represents the latest in Ford’s ongoing commitment to the Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1. Opened in 1951 as Ford’s first engine plant in Ohio, the facility has produced more than 35 million engines.

In 2004, Ford invested $350 million into the plant for redesign and installation of an all-new assembly line as well as block, crankshaft and cylinder head machining lines. The plant also led the way in 2009 with the introduction of Ford’s first EcoBoost engines, which use gasoline turbocharged direct-injection technology for up to 20 percent better fuel economy, 15 percent fewer CO2 emissions and superior driving performance versus larger displacement engines.

Nine New or Upgraded Powertrains This Year
Ford is introducing nine new or upgraded powertrains in North America for its 2011 model vehicles, representing $1.8 billion worth of investment in engineering and facilities. Among the nine powertrains are:

  • 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine for the F-Series Super Duty

  • 6.7-liter Power Stroke Diesel for the F-Series Super Duty

  • 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift® automatic transmission for the F-Series Super Duty

  • 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine for the Mustang

  • 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V-8 engine for the Mustang

  • Six-speed automatic transmission for the Mustang

The 2011 Mustang is the most technically advanced model yet of America's favorite sports car. Both V-6 and V-8 models feature Twin Independent Variable Valve Timing (Ti-VCT), double overhead cams, four-valves per-cylinder and free-flowing exhaust systems. Both models are available with six-speed manual or an upgraded 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 2011 Mustang is a strong example of Ford’s industry leading fuel economy gains. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Ford’s combined car and truck fuel economy has improved nearly 20 percent since 2004 – almost double the next closest competitor.

Additionally, Ford has lowered its tailpipe CO2 emissions more than any other automaker. Ford’s fleet-wide average of 434 grams per mile is 37 grams lower than the 2007 total and 25 grams lower than 2008.

Quotes

“Ford is absolutely committed to delivering class-leading fuel efficiency with every new vehicle we introduce, and this investment in Cleveland provides further proof.”

The 5.0-Liter is Back: 2011 Ford Mustang GT Leads Class with 412 HP, Fuel Efficiency, Chassis Dynamics

Monday, December 28th, 2009

  • The new Mustang GT continues Ford\'s powertrain offensive with an all-new 5.0-liter V-8, which uses advanced technology to deliver 412 horsepower and projected unsurpassed highway mileage of 25 mpg

  • For 2011, Mustang GT adds specially tuned Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), 11.5-inch front and 11.8-inch rear vented disc brakes, and an enhanced suspension featuring an improved rear lower control arm and stiffened rear stabilizer bushings

  • For enthusiasts, a Brembo brake package, with larger rotors and calipers from the Ford Shelby GT500® Mustang, unique 19-inch wheels and summer performance tires, is offered; new fender badges herald return of the 5.0-liter engine

The 5.0 is back! The 2011 Ford Mustang GT arrives with an all-new advanced 5.0-liter V-8 engine, developed by a passionate cadre of enthusiastic engineers who rallied around the common goal of delivering more than 400 horsepower.

The modern 5.0-liter four-valve Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) V-8 engine in the new Mustang GT will deliver 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. At the same time, fuel economy is projected to be better than the previous model and unsurpassed in the segment.

Coyote in the lobby

Many of the engineers on the development team have worked in the Engine and Electrical Engineering Building on the Dearborn, Mich., product development center campus. For years they walked past the original 5.0-liter V-8 Coyote Indy racing engine on display in the lobby, continually inspired by its mix of heritage, high technology and horsepower.

The powertrain development community had long wanted to develop a new 5.0-liter powertrain, with strategic discussions beginning in 2000. By 2007, the Mustang competitive landscape was beginning to change, a sign that the time was right for advancing the Mustang GT powertrain to world-class levels.

The team began 5.0-liter engine development with the objective of delivering 400-plus horsepower, on a timetable accelerated by 12 months without compromises in reliability, durability, fuel economy, or noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control.

Development test engines and benchmarks included 5.0-liter blocks, employing different bore and stroke measurements, GT500 four-valve-per-cylinder heads and cams, various intake manifold runner configurations, differing compression ratios and a deep-sump oil pan. The team also evaluated Ford Racing\'s 5.0-liter \"Cammer\" V-8 crate engine for transferable best practices.

Extensive computer-aided engineering (CAE) modeling, development engine experimentation and evaluation in combination with intricate machine work brought this promising, all-new configuration to jaw-dropping life in an accelerated time frame.

The result of this development is an \"and\" solution, not an \"or.\" 2011 Mustang buyers will enjoy the benefits of a powerful engine as well as responsible fuel economy.

Ti-VCT

A critical element in the 5.0-liter V-8\'s ability to deliver 412 horsepower, with improved drivability, tractability and fuel economy over the 2010 Mustang GT powertrain, is enhanced Ti-VCT.

For a high-performance application, the team specified cam-torque-actuated variable camshaft timing. Using existing cam torque energy, with assistance from pressurized oil, meant that minimal upgrades to the oil pump were required, resulting in less parasitic drag. Increased volumetric and thermal efficiency gives faster Ti-VCT response at all engine speeds.

During the development phase, camshaft lift profile and port optimization started with higher-lift Ford Racing aftermarket units, modified for compatibility with various four-valve-per-cylinder heads. Extensive CAE and dynamometer testing was performed to fine-tune camshaft events and port flow for performance and fuel efficiency in conjunction with the variable camshaft timing.

The resulting all-new aluminum four-valve-per-cylinder heads feature a compact roller finger follower valvetrain layout leaving more room for high-flow ports for free-breathing performance. Head structure was designed to support higher cylinder head pressures and cross-flow cooling for sustained high-rpm use. Head bolt size was increased from 11 to 12 millimeters to contain the higher combustion pressures.

The aluminum block was developed for optimized windage and oil drainback under lateral conditions and high rpm, such as a track-day outing for an enthusiastic owner and driver. Increased main bearing bulkhead widths and nodular iron cross-bolted main bearing caps with upsized bolts were also employed to accommodate the significant performance increase. An additional element is the increased capacity and baffling of the deep-sump stamped steel oil pan to enable sustained high-rpm use and offer the convenience of 10,000-mile oil change intervals. Piston-cooling jets also were incorporated for performance-minded customers and for faster oil warm-up on cold start.

Specially designed tubular exhaust headers were developed to maximize exhaust pulse separation and improve flow. A team analyst actually fabricated the tubular headers in his home workshop, bringing the CAE design to life.

Performance and fuel economy

The 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque delivered by the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0-liter V-8 represent significant increases versus the 2010 model year output levels.

The six-speed automatic transmission on the 2011 Mustang GT will deliver up to an estimated 25 mpg highway and 17 in the city. This is up from 23 mpg highway and 17 city for the 2010 model. Six-speed manual transmission Mustang GT models for 2011 are projected to deliver 24 mpg highway and 16 city, matching the 2010 model but delivering significantly more horsepower and performance feel.

2011 Mustang GT fuel economy is enabled by the Ti-VCT, the six-speed transmissions in automatic or manual variations, EPAS and an additional rear decklid seal to enhance aerodynamics.

Fuel economy also is aided by engineering a lightweight powertrain. The engine, as shipped, weighs just 430 pounds. This represents a weight savings of more than 20 percent versus the previous 5.0-liter offering. Lower mass can be attributed to the aluminum block and heads, the lightweight composite intake manifold, composite cam covers and hollow camshafts. Improved driving dynamics EPAS has made a dramatic contribution to Mustang GT driving dynamics, delivering quicker on-center steering response, increased effort at highway speeds and reduced effort required in low-speed parking maneuvers. EPAS allows specific tuning for the Mustang GT application.

The 2011 Mustang GT features an enhanced rear lower control arm to add stiffness, improve powertrain NVH control and sharpen handling. A stiffened rear stabilizer bar for better on-center steering is also included. Stabilizer bar diameters, spring rates and dampers all have been tuned for improved dynamics.

A Brembo brake package upgrade will be available for serious enthusiasts. This package includes 14-inch vented front discs from the GT500 Mustang, unique 19-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires.

Added convenience content

For 2011, Mustang GT offers drivers several new convenience technologies, including:

  • Standard message center

  • Integrated blind spot mirrors

  • MyKey™ programmable vehicle key

  • Illuminated visors

  • Universal garage door opener

  • Sun visor storage

New look

From the 5.0 fender badges to the new engine cover, Mustang GT honors and continues the proud heritage of its predecessors. The speedometer increases to 160 mph and the tachometer redline advances from 6,500 to 7,000 rpm.

Three vibrant new colors will be added for 2011 including Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat, Race Red and Ingot Silver.

Improved NVH control and convertible rigidity

For 2011, Mustang GT benefits from across-the-board NVH improvements. These include additional sound-deadening material on either side of the instrument panel, an additional seal between door and rocker panel to reduce wind noise and a real wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces.

Mustang GT convertible models feature enhanced structural rigidity, with lateral stiffness improved by 12 percent versus the 2010 model. A tower-to-tower front strut brace is now standard, and the V-brace has been stiffened by adding gussets. The secondary crossmember also has been stiffened while a front Z-brace has been added, connecting primary and secondary crossmembers. A-pillar stiffening foam also has been added to increase rigidity.

Ford Racing Mustang dominance extends to Europe with second consecutive GT4 European Cup Championship

Ford Mustangs at Koni Challenge

Eric de Doncker earned his second consecutive GT4 European Cup championship after placing third in the first two races of the weekend and fourth in the final race of the weekend in his No. 1 Mustang FR500GT4 at Nogaro, France. De Doncker tallied four wins on the season and finished on the podium in 14 of 17 events.

“This season has been very good, with tough competition, but we've achieved our goal once more,” said de Doncker. “I have to thank my team for all the hard work they did to get us here again… We've had an excellent car that was built to win.
“I'm happy for the team and for Ford as well.”

The weekend didn’t start well for the defending champion as the first qualifying session was held in the rain. He was unable to use the Mustang FR500GT4 to its potential in the slippery conditions and qualified ninth. But De Doncker fought hard all weekend and gained enough points in the first race to clinch the title.

De Doncker’s championship season follows his dominating performance in the series’ inaugural season in 2007, winning four of 10 races and appearing on the podium eight times.

2010 Ford Mustang Profile

It all begins at the grille. Mustang chief designer Douglas Gaffka explains that this week’s reveal image provides not just a glimpse of the upcoming pony car, but it hints at the design philosophy behind the 2010 Mustang.

“The new Mustang will be a distinct presence on the road,” said Gaffka. "Everything flows from the shark-nose front; it sets up the direction and tension of all the surfaces. It's even more aggressive than before- it’s a modern interpretation of the strong Mustang lineage."

Senior designer Robert Gelardi echoes, "Every element on this car, including the leading edge, is a cohesive, connected part of this new chapter in Mustang DNA. Both the exterior and interior are modern and dynamic, yet you'll recognize the Mustang’s strong bloodline."

Strong, dynamic lines and sinuous sculptural wheel arches give the impression that the 2010 Mustang is ready to strike. "The sheetmetal is taut and strong, like an Olympic runner ready to take off," added exterior design manager George Saridakis. "The resulting shapes communicate movement and energy."

But the overall shape is only part of the next chapter in the Mustang story. Every detail, no matter how small, was executed with world-class design and craftsmanship. "Both the interior and exterior are full of precise, jeweled details," says design manager Gary Morales. "Whether it’s the headlamps, badging and wheels outside, or the gauges, steering wheel and air registers inside, you'll see the care and quality that went into the design," adds Gelardi.

Mustang's new look includes a new take on the iconic pony badge

2010 Ford Mustang BadgeIf you’re wondering what the 2010 Mustang will look like, its new pony badge offers a clue. Like the upcoming 2010 Mustang, the new pony badge is more defined, more muscular and sure to catch the eye of Mustang enthusiasts.

Senior Designer Rick Howard spent hours researching images of horses and understanding their appearance in natural, wild settings. That effort, along with his personal riding experience, helped bring forward the design of the Mustang pony badge.

“We’re very much concerned with detail and precision in our cars at Ford,” said Senior Designer Rick Howard. “We want our Mustang pony badge to be as good as the rest of the car.”

Like the Mustang itself, which was revealed at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the Mustang emblem has a proud heritage. The original Mustang logo was drawn by Phil Clark for the Mustang I. The Mustang logo then was refined for the Mustang II in 1974 by Charles Keresztes, a former member of Hungary’s Olympic equestrian team. The pony continued on the front grille through 1978 when it was replaced by “FORD” in block letters through 1982. The iconic Ford Blue Oval graced the front of Mustangs through 1993. The pony emblem returned in 1994 with some refinements. The logo was updated again in 2005.

SHELBY GT500KR ACHIEVES 1.0G

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Suspension and aerodynamic changes bring King of the Road to 1.0G

2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR

The changes, on paper, may not seem significant. Try telling that to the engineers at Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT), and they'll be quick to say otherwise. Handling tests conducted by SVT prior to the launch of the Shelby GT500KR proved that small, calculated changes to aerodynamics and suspension tuning can make big improvements. In fact, the Shelby GT500KR is capable of sustaining 1.0g of grip around the skidpad, a number considered to be the upper stratosphere of road-legal sports cars.

Kerry Baldori, Chief Vehicle Engineer for SVT, talks about aerodynamics saying, "Our goal with the Shelby GT500KR was to increase downforce on the front wheels versus the GT500, while at the same time giving it a more balanced aerodynamic package." SVT achieved just this by adding a larger carbon fiber front splitter, lowering the ride height, and installing a low-drag rear spoiler. These changes not only increased front end downforce by 31%, but they also managed to reduce drag by three percent.

Changes to the suspension tuning compliment the new aerodynamics to bring the Shelby GT500KR to its incredibly high grip levels. Revised struts that are 17% stiffer front and 7% stiffer rear reduce pitch and roll, and increased negative camber in front gives the car more grip in turns. The Shelby GT500KR is also lowered 20mm in front and 15mm in back to lower the center of gravity. Finally, exclusive to the GT500KR are new Goodyear F1 performance tires with a brand new rubber compound for North America. These tires are not available on any other car in the U.S., and are made of a special rubber that is as close to an R (race) compound as you will find on the street.

All of these changes, while seemingly small, propel the Shelby GT500KR into the top level of the sports car handling echelon. The Shelby GT500 is a capable car in its own right, but leave it to SVT to find even more performance out of an already high performing sports car.

Mustang Ranked as Most Popular Sports Car on MSN

Thursday, August 7th, 2008
2009 Ford Glass Roof Mustang

Mustang’s dynamic combination of value and performance has propelled it to the top of MSN’s list of Most Popular Sports Cars. With over 9 million Mustangs sold since its inception in 1964, consumers have shown their confidence in the epitome of American muscle cars. The 2008 Mustang capitalizes on more than 40 years of Mustang heritage with its signature long hood and short rear deck, along with classic design cues that have defined Mustangs since the 1960s.

“When the latest Mustang debuted in 2005, its flashback styling tapped into a deep well of American automotive lust. Its retro design – plainly displayed via round headlights, triangular windows, three-element taillights, and galloping pony grille - only added appeal to one of the last affordable American sports cars,” said Perry Stern of MSN autos.

Based on site visits to vehicle research pages on MSN during April through June of 2008, Mustang has held the top spot on the list for several years.

Mustang History 07-28-78

Sunday, July 27th, 2008
1978 Ford Mustang

Production of the Mustang II King Cobra model ended on July 28, 1978. Even more exclusive than the popular Mustang II Cobra II fastback of that era, the King Cobra came with a standard 5.0-liter V-8, adjustable shocks, heavy duty springs, a rear stabilizer bar, front brake cooling ducts and unique alloy wheels. While pundits recall it mostly for an emission-choked horsepower rating and its splashy snake hood graphics, big front air dam and wheel spats, the King Cobra was the top performance Mustang model of its day, designed to compete directly with GM's "Screaming Chicken" F-Body. Less than 5,000 Mustang II 1978 King Cobras were produced.

One-of-a-kind Mustang AV8R to benefit youth programs at air show

Ford Mustang AV8R

The Ford Mustang drew its name from the famous P-51 Mustang fighter, which played a vital role in World War II as a bomber escort. The iconic car and airplane will be together at the world-famous AirVenture Oshkosh, as Ford continues its commitment to AirVenture’s Gathering of Eagles youth aviation program.

The special one-of-a-kind Mustang AV8R will be up for auction on July 31. It features several enhancements from Ford Racing, including a handling pack (dampers, lowering springs, anti-roll bar kit and strut tower brace), supercharger and tuned exhaust. The improvements will produce 400 horsepower from the aluminum block 4.6-liter, 24-valve V8 engine. The Ford Racing additions are complemented by a "Satin Silver" paint scheme and a glass roof. An Air Force star is embedded in the glass to enhance the aviation-inspired look.

Proceeds from the auction benefit the Gathering of Eagles program, which assists young people interested in aviation-related careers.

SOYBEAN HELPS FORD REDUCE OIL CONSUMPTION

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Fuel economy isn't the only area where Ford is seizing the opportunity to reduce oil usage.

Thanks to a versatile agricultural wonder called the soybean, Ford is also cutting down on its use of petroleum-based products. In 2008, for example, the Ford Mustang became the industry's first vehicle to have foam seats made from a 5% soy-based polyol instead of the standard 100% petroleum. The move garnered Ford, along with partner Lear, a 2008 award from the Global Plastics Environmental Conference (GPEC), held in Florida this month.

The company is using approximately 2.2 million pounds of soy foam in the 2008 Mustang. Based on this application alone, this more energy-conscious alternative potentially represents a carbon dioxide reduction of 605,000 pounds annually.

Mustang isn't the only product sporting the new seat cushions and seat backs. The 2008 Ford F-150 and Expedition, along with the Lincoln Navigator, also feature the soy-based materials. The Ford Escape will join the lineup in 2009.

Ford's soy research is partially funded by the United Soybean Board (USB), a group of farmers/leaders that oversees investments in soy-based technologies. Ford recently announced at the USB's Commodity Classic Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, that the company is aggressively examining other ways to replace petroleum with soy-based materials for automotive applications.

  • Ford is the only auto manufacturer financially supported by the USB to further progress with soy-related automotive applications.

  • Ford has perfected its soy foam formulation to replace up to 40% of the standard petroleum-based polyol with a soy derivative that meets Ford's strict performance requirements. Ford has licensed this 40% formulation to John Deere and Sears Manufacturing.
