And You Thought Avatar Was Cool!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010
Engineers at United Space Alliance (USA) and Ford Motor Company are sharing their animation software experiences to create virtual reality simulations that benefit both astronauts and drivers.

Ford is applying virtual reality animation software that is used by movie animators and video game creators to improve real-life driving situations before the first prototype is even built. In an immersive Virtual Evaluation lab (iVE), Ford engineers create virtual vehicles complete with exterior views.

Space-age sedan
Engineers for USA, the prime Space Shuttle contractor, are using the same technology at the Kennedy Space Center to help build future space vehicles safer and more efficiently. Current applications include using the technology to track and characterize launch debris during ascent. Past applications include developing processes to more efficiently remove and re-install the reinforced carbon-carbon panels on the Space Shuttle wing leading edges.

In the case of the Lincoln MKS, for example, iVE was used to test multiple iterations of the sedan’s centerstack at varying eye points. The intent is to find the best possible placement of controls and displays not only for aesthetics and visibility, but it helps engineers and designers to see how certain designs and layouts look before the vehicle is built.

Ford iVE technicians can put themselves in the customer’s shoes and get a better understanding of how the vehicle’s dashboard displays look from the customer’s point of view or evaluate height of the centerstack, for example. They can then judge things like whether the cockpit feels too crowded or cavernous, if all the buttons and dials on the dashboard are visible and within reach, and whether the layout is appealing.

Virtual vehicle development
Ford is the auto industry leader when it comes to melding state-of-the-art motion capture and immersive virtual reality tools. Using analytical data derived from those tests, Ford can test targets in the iVE lab to improve visibility, quality and comfort of its vehicles, while significantly reducing the time and cost that come with prototype development.

Ford engineers, using a suite of virtual tools including animation software, have shaved eight to 14 months off the time it took to develop a vehicle five years ago.

USA, a leading space operations company, is also using the same digital animation tool to develop models that accurately predict how the loss of materials would affect liftoff of the Space Shuttle or the next generation vehicles.

Working with Ford, USA is looking at ways to customize the technology used by Ford to help it make quick decisions about repairs and maintenance, as well as determine the best decisions should a spacecraft face unexpected events.

These two teams are sharing information to the benefit of both. Ford engineers have helped USA to specify software enhancements to human simulation software and motion tracking technology with the goal of simulating spacecraft repairs.

In turn, USA engineers have provided expertise to Ford engineers to enhance the immersive virtual experience by improving response time, allowing for a smoother and more realistic environment. They’ve also provided expertise on computer and projection hardware.

Quotes
“In this virtual environment, we can evaluate early vehicle designs against a backdrop of virtual conditions and literally experience a vehicle from someone else’s vantage point before it is built, helping us to create a car, truck or crossover that provides the perfect environment for the driver and its occupants.”
– Elizabeth Baron, Ford’s Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization Technical Specialist

“Being able to evaluate a vehicle in the virtual world allows us to duplicate anything to recreate a realistic driving experience. We’re even able to include passing cars, pedestrians and animated towns in the driving experience.”
– Elizabeth Baron, Ford’s Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization Technical Specialist

“The opportunities working with the Ford Visualization team are providing us invaluable knowledge in combining ergonomic analysis with visualization technology. It was extremely interesting to see how similar our efforts are regarding automobile and spacecraft processing. When the two teams got together a wealth of creative ideas were formed and lasting friendships were made. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Ford team.”
– Brad Lawrence, USA Computer Science Lead

“Helping our designers build cars that are a better fit for drivers and passengers is a thrill and teaming up and sharing ideas with USA for the benefit of our space program is a whole other level of cool. We’ve learned a great deal from USA about how to make our virtual lab even more life-like for engineers and designers so our new vehicles look and feel just right inside.”
– Elizabeth Baron, Ford’s Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization Technical Specialist

“Ford is better able to refine the design of new vehicles, and USA aims to prepare for any scenario that lies ahead.”
– Elizabeth Baron, Ford’s Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization Technical Specialist

Recycle Your Road Maps – We’ve Got You Covered

Ford Road Maps

Remember road maps made of paper? (Wow, you are old!) You might still have one stuffed in your glove compartment along with a print out of MapQuest directions to your cousin Charlie’s farm upstate. Put all of it into your recycle bin, because you’ll never need them again.

Lincoln MKS owners report “Highest Satisfaction” with their Clarion-equipped Voice-Activated Navigation System with SIRIUS® Travel Link™, according to J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study. The same system in the Ford Flex is second on the list.

Co-developed with Ford, the Clarion navigation system in five Ford and Lincoln vehicles earned five of the top 10 positions, in addition to receiving high marks from consumers for being easy to use.

The newly released study, based on responses from nearly 17,000 consumers who recently purchased or leased 2009 model year vehicles with factory-installed navigation systems, was conducted in October.

This marks the sixth J.D. Power and Associates award Clarion has received in the past four years for either in-dash navigation or multimedia systems.

Superior function and design
Ford’s Clarion-supplied Voice-Activated Navigation System with SIRIUS® Travel Link™ has been specifically designed with the customer in mind.

The system is loaded with features and functions designed to provide customers with a superior level of connectivity, information and entertainment on the road. There are customizable home screens, 3-D bird’s-eye maps, a digital jukebox and available automatic climate control, to name just a few.

A previous system in the Lincoln Zephyr had won the 2006 J.D. Power Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study, so when design team members began working on the updated version, they knew they were headed in the right direction. Working with customer feedback, they focused on making the best even better.

They enhanced the graphics, making them even brighter and easier to read, and created brand-specific color palettes. The touch-screen design and menu organization was based on logical grouping and frequency of use.

And while navigation is a basic part of the system, essential too is its seamless integration with its entertainment and communication components like SYNC® and SIRIUS Travel Link.

Finding their way home
The study highlights the fact that navigation systems are becoming a part of daily life for consumers. More than half of the respondents in the J.D. Power study reported they use their system on a regular basis – at least one to two times a week – and that real-time traffic information, as well as voice-recognition, is becoming an increasingly popular feature.

This follows the demographic information uncovered by a 2009 study on consumer navigation device trends conducted by Interactive Data Corp and Telematics that showed nearly 70 percent of respondents – almost equally split between men and women – have been using a navigation device of some kind for nearly a year, and about 30 percent said they used it weekly.

Quotes
“Clarion is very honored to have the privilege to work with Ford in supplying navigation and audio systems. Clarion is committed to supplying high-quality navigation and multimedia systems that offer appealing features that consumers demand most in a very user-friendly package.”
– Matt Matsuda, President of Clarion Corporation of America

“Consumers are spending so much time in their vehicles today, so it’s become increasingly important for them to remain connected. But we realize that all that connectivity and information doesn’t help people unless the system is easy to use. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to make sure our navigation system is not only extremely functional, but exceptionally intuitive.”
– Jim Buczkowski, Director, Ford’s Global Electrical and Electronics Systems Engineering

“Every decision we made when designing this system focused on the user experience. We stepped away from being engineers, and we looked at this as users, and that’s the key to the success of this system. Navigation is really just a small part of it. There’s so much more to the system, and it’s imperative that it all has to work together.”
– Jason Johnson, Ford’s User Interface Design Engineer

“Consumers are increasingly demanding seamless connectivity between technologies in their house, their office and their car. More than anything, people want to stay connected and informed. Understanding what customers will want and need tomorrow – or even next year – isn’t enough. We’re working to anticipate needs and desires further out, so we can come up with new ways of providing an experience that will make people’s lives easier and more fulfilling.”
– Sheryl Connelly, Ford’s Global Trends and Futuring Manager

What Younger Car Buyers Are Purchasing Now

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
The Younger Taurus

It’s no wonder that the single biggest demographic for energy drinks also goes for Ford’s EcoBoost™ engine technology. EcoBoost is driving younger, more affluent customers to Ford showrooms. And many of these buyers are hot to trade in their competitive-make vehicles to get their hands on one equipped with the fuel-efficient direct-injection turbocharged EcoBoost engine.

SHO-ing off
Living proof is the all-new Ford Taurus SHO, with EcoBoost as standard. The average SHO buyer is 54 years old – 10-plus years younger than the base-model Taurus customer – and second youngest in its segment. The median household income of the SHO buyer is $20,000 more than the base Taurus customer. And as for conquests, nearly 55 percent of buyers are trading in Toyota Avalons, Nissan Altimas and Chevy Monte Carlos, among other competitive products, to drive away in a Taurus SHO. That’s the second-highest conquest rate in the segment.

Moreover, Taurus SHO customers want more and are willing to spend more to get it. Ford is seeing transaction rate improvements as EcoBoost buyers tend to package more options in their purchase, and the vehicles are selling with fewer incentives.

Taurus SHO has the highest average transaction price in the segment, with customers paying $10,000 or more above base-model price to enjoy not only the fuel efficiency and performance of the EcoBoost engine, but other premium package amenities such as all-wheel drive, Ford SYNC®, 19-inch wheels and a reverse sensing system.

EcoBoost spread
Other vehicles that offer EcoBoost, such as the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS, are exhibiting other demographic phenomena.

Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost – along with Taurus SHO – is helping attract more 35- to 55-year-old males, a demographic the company has been working hard to bring back to the Ford fold. Ford sedans with EcoBoost are improving traffic with this demographic that has eluded Ford in recent years, says Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager. This group of shoppers, in fact, represents nearly 35 percent of Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost buyers, which is more than 5 percentage points higher than the MKS equipped with the 3.7-liter engine. For Taurus SHO, it’s above 40 percent, more than double the 35- to 55-year-old males that purchase a base-model Taurus.

Other customers making the jump to Ford vehicles are hitting the Flex with EcoBoost equally hard; three out of four buyers are trading in a competitive product, including the Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia and Chevy Traverse.

More with EcoBoost
EcoBoost technology incorporates direct injection and turbocharging, allowing for the downsizing of engines, to provide customers with up to a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy and 15 percent reduction in emissions versus larger-displacement engines. With the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, customers can expect V-8 performance but V-6 fuel efficiency.

Sales of Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost-equipped vehicles have already exceeded company projections, with October sales twice as high as September.

Ford will complement the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine with the launch of new 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder variants next year, which will be offered on several global Ford products, including midsize and large vehicles.

Quotes
“EcoBoost technology is helping bring in a new customer to Ford dealer showrooms. This customer is younger, more affluent, and more often trades in competitive products.”
– Amy Marentic, Ford Group Marketing Manager

“No one else offers the level of performance and versatility of Flex with EcoBoost. It’s a compelling buy in the crossover segment for customers who are looking for the power and performance of a traditional V-8 but do not want to sacrifice this for fuel economy.”
– Kate Pearce, Flex Marketing Manager

CLEVELAND ENGINE PLANT NO. 1 REOPENS

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1 reopens to become first site in the world to produce EcoBoost engines.

EcoBoost - combination

Ford invested $55 million for tooling and equipment upgrades at Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, which has been idled since 2007, to build the EcoBoost engine. The powerful, fuel-efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engines represent the cornerstone of Ford’s technology plan to deliver fuel efficiency and performance to millions.

EcoBoost will first be available this summer in the 2010 Lincoln MKS, Lincoln MKT, Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex. Production is slated to begin this spring, with approximately 250 employees forming shifts to build the engine. The employees are a combination of employees who worked in the plant, before it was idled in 2007, and employees from other plants.

Employee training and flexible manufacturing are key components to the success of the Cleveland Engine Plant. Here are some highlights of this two-fold strategy:

Extensive Employee Training

  • The workforce participated in an intensive three-tier training program aimed at improving quality and empowering employees. The first two phases of training covered basic manufacturing operations and employees learned how to manage their own equipment and work area through “manufacturing work teams” at the plant.

  • For the final phase, the plant will be working with Cuyahoga Community College. During four weeks of onsite classroom training employees will upgrade skill sets for machining technicians and production team leaders, and will receive 10 credit hours toward an associate’s degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.

Flexible Manufacturing

  • Outfitted with a flexible manufacturing system for powertrains, featuring modern, Computerized Numerical Control machine tools (CNC machines) the facility can easily be retooled and reprogrammed to perform new tasks with minimal disruption to production.

  • A new, internal database will ensure quality is built into the engine from the outset. During production, each engine built at the plant will have a sophisticated engine “birth history” that allows plant engineers to trace the precise path taken by any part so any quality control issue can be traced back to its source.

Quotes
“The EcoBoost engine is a strategic product that will provide Ford with a competitive edge. The Cleveland site is thrilled to be delivering an important product for the company. We have an outstanding, specially trained workforce that is committed to delivering a world-class, quality product for our customers.”
- Jan Allman, Cleveland Site Manager

“This training approach not only delivers the technical training to the workforce but also empowers them which is a cultural change from the traditional management-directed system. You’re turning over the keys to the hourly team members to let them do what they need to do to get their jobs done. Each employee, working under a team leader, is responsible for his or her area and they work as a team to deliver a high quality engine.”
- Kevin Heck, Cleveland Engine No. 1 Area Manager

“What we do is primarily teach job skills, so this fits right in with our mission statement. What’s unique about this is we’re doing it in Ford-dedicated workspace; we’re bringing our instructors and our equipment to Ford and we’re offering the credit hours. We, along with Ford, understand the importance of helping people expand their skills and knowledge for the rapidly changing workplace.”
-John Gajewski, Executive Director of Cuyahoga Community College Workforce and Economic Development Division

ECOBOOST AT A GLANCE

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Ford’s new EcoBoost delivers the performance of a V-8 and the fuel economy of an aspirated V-6.

EcoBoost at Glance

Under Ford’s global initiative to provide powertrains that deliver fuel efficiency while meeting the power and performance needs customers demand, the first wave of new EcoBoost™ engines make their debut in the Lincoln MKS, MKT and Ford Flex later this year. Here are some key highlights on Ford’s new EcoBoost technology:

Power and fuel economy – The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter Duratec V-6 EcoBoost engine produces 355 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 350 ft.-lb. of torque at 3,500 rpm. A 10-15 percent fuel-economy benefit is expected versus normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 engines in the same competitive class.

Engine – The proven Duratec 3.5-liter V-6 comprises the base engine architecture. To handle the increased torque that EcoBoost delivers, some upgrades were made to some of the components, such as the cylinder block, crankshaft, connecting rods pistons and exhaust valves to ensure the EcoBoost V-6 engine is as robust as possible.

Turbochargers – Two Honeywell GT15 turbochargers with water-cooled bearings and operate in parallel, spinning at approximately 170,000 rpm up to 12 PSI. They are rated for a 150,000-mile, 10-year life.

Direct fuel injection – A cam-driven high-pressure fuel pump feeds the fuel injectors at pressures ranging from 200 to 2,175 PSI (pounds per square inch) depending on customer driving. A typical port fuel injection system operates at pressures of around 60 PSI. Six sprayers in each injector target fuel into the cylinder, resulting in a cleaner and more-efficient fuel burn and better cold-start emissions.

Quotes

“The Duratec 3.5 family is a good example of Ford’s forward planning in terms of powertrain technologies. The engine architecture itself was well protected for high-boost applications, so it didn’t require an extensive durability program. It was in good shape to start with.”
- Brett Hinds, EcoBoost Design Manager

FORD LEADS ALL AUTOMAKERS WITH MOST TOP SAFETY PICKS

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Advanced structures, AdvanceTrac help four Ford vehicles earn “Top Safety Picks”

AdvanceTrac

With a total of 16 to date, Ford Motor Company has earned more Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Picks” than any other automaker. Four of Ford’s 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – received the honor, allowing Ford to surpass its closest rival, Honda.

Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the Institute’s crash tests, which requires that vehicles earn the top “good” ratings in the Institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. As well, since 2007, it is required that vehicles must offer electronic stability control.

All four vehicles feature AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. IIHS has stated “stability control significantly reduces crash risk by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers.”

Quotes

“Flex and MKS are built on a platform that has a tremendous safety heritage – one that it shares with the 2009 Ford Taurus, rated America’s safest full-size car. And Fusion and Milan prove that a high level of safety can come in a midsize package.”
- Steve Kozak, Ford’s Chief Engineer for Safety Systems

“Safety is a top purchase consideration, second only to fuel efficiency, so the top safety ratings and competitive fuel economy of Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan are a winning combination.”
- Michael Crowley, Ford North America Car and Crossover Marketing Manager

Ford Leads with Most ‘Top Safety Picks’

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Ford Leads All Automakers with Most 'Top Safety Picks', Besting Honda in IIHS Crash Tests

2009 Ford Flex

Ford Motor Company has earned more "Top Safety Pick" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other automaker with a total of 16 to date. Ford surpassed its closest rival Honda this week when four of its 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – achieved “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford also has more 5-star government crash test ratings than any other automaker.

How They Get Picked

To earn IIHS’s "Top Safety Pick," vehicles must earn the top "good" ratings in the institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. An added requirement since 2007 is that vehicles also must offer electronic stability control.

Helping Drivers Maintain Control

Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the institute’s crash tests, and AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control is available for each vehicle. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When AdvanceTrac® senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help the driver keep the car tracking on its intended path. IIHS has stated that "AdvanceTrac significantly reduces crash risk by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers."

Structural Strength Is a Safety Fundamental

Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan get some of their core strength from the use of lightweight aluminum-coated boron steel – one of the strongest weld-able materials – in the body structure. The use of high-strength steel in the B-pillars is only part of their robust safety profile. Ford engineers also located the side door intrusion beams to help manage and absorb energy during side impact crashes.

Connectivity Solutions Go Beyond Music and Phone Calls

2008 Focus Interior Microsoft Sync Access Points

Industry-exclusive Ford SYNC™ is a fully integrated, voice-activated in-car communications and entertainment system that works with most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players. Beginning later this year, SYNC will also provide accident assistance through '911 Assist,' and will be able to send customers Vehicle Health Reports on key systems to help them plan routine service appointments and alert them to critical systems issues.
One might expect this technology to be available only on luxury vehicles, but Ford SYNC will be offered on nearly every Ford and Mercury vehicle and will be standard on Lincoln vehicles in 2008. The 2009 models being added to the SYNC play list include the all-new Ford Flex and F-150; the 2009 Ford Escape, Escape Hybrid and 2009 Ford Expedition. SYNC will be standard equipment on the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS when it launches this summer.

SYNC is Ford's platform for smarter, easily upgradeable in-car connectivity. Already, Ford is moving beyond the music and the mobile phone to master technologies that will also connect customers with the real-time information and services that they want and value while on the road.

  • SIRIUS Travel Link is a suite of data services that links drivers to traffic and weather information, fuel prices at nearby stations and the most up-to-date sports and entertainment news – along with a 23,000-song personal jukebox. Broadcast through SIRIUS's existing satellite and repeater infrastructure, the exclusive Travel Link feature launches in conjunction with Ford's next-generation navigation system. Watch for it first on the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS this summer.

  • The new 2009 F-150 and F-Series Super Duty become true mobile offices with the Ford Work Solutions suite of technological tools for the working professional and commercial driver. In addition to hands-free mobile phone connectivity and voice-activated navigation, Work Solutions allows customers to monitor on-truck tool inventories, access and print documents and review engineering drawings from inside the cab.

EasyFuel Capless Fuel-Filler System

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Ford makes filling up easier

2009 Ford F-150 FX4

The EasyFuel™ Capless Fuel-Filler System eliminates the gas tank screw cap for more simple fuel fill ups. No more gas odor on hands or gloves, or the unwanted amber dash light because the gas cap wasn't screwed on tightly enough.
In addition to eliminating these hassles, EasyFuel helps reduce evaporative emissions that create smog and contribute to global warming. Spring-loaded tabs pull back a flap in the filler neck when the pump nozzle is inserted. When fueling is complete, and the nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.

EasyFuel™ was introduced on the 2008 Ford Explorer. It will be standard equipment on the new Ford F-150, Flex and Lincoln MKS in 2009. The system will be offered on the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury product line by 2010.

SYNC YOUR 2008 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

The award-winning SYNC in-car communication system is now available to select Navigator customers.

Lincoln Navigator with SYNC

Ford has just released its first dealer-installed SYNC kit that is fully functional, completely seamless and upgradeable to support SYNC features and functions. The installation time is quick, taking under two hours, and at under $550 dollars, the retrofit kit is highly affordable.

Owners of select 2008 Navigator or Navigator L models can get the Ford SYNC retrofit kit installed in vehicles equipped with the Elite Package that includes the voice-activated navigation radio and rear seat DVD. Vehicles must also have been built after December 4, 2007.

There is no need for an add-on HMI or microphone to operate SYNC as the system uses the existing steering wheel button controls and voice-activation functionality connected to the navigation system.

Committed to continually improving in-car connectivity, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle owners that have either factory- or dealer-installed SYNC will be able to upgrade the system's software and access future features and functions. Two new features that will be introduced later in 2009 include:

911 Assist – This free-of-charge accident assistance feature can place a call to a local 911 operator should the air bag deploy. The driver must have a cell phone that is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC.

Vehicle Health Report (VHR) – Customers can stay on top of all vehicle maintenance with a simple voice request at any time. Vehicle owners first set up their personal preferences at the SYNC Web site (www.syncmyride.com).

These types of ongoing innovations have ensured that Ford SYNC is on track to reach 1 million sales in 2009. This summer Ford SYNC will be available to the all-new Ford Flex, F-150 and Lincoln MKS. The 2009 model year Lincoln Navigator, which will launch later this year, will come factory-equipped with SYNC as a standard feature.

HIGHLY DURABLE, QUALITY PAINT

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Ford outpaces the industry, and creates long-lasting and environmentally safe paint processes.

Environmental Paint Process Applies Paint To E-Series

Even though Ford leads the industry with the most long-term paint durability and fewest chips and scratches, according to Global Quality Research System studies, the automotive company is committed to exceeding customer expectations through continuous quality improvements.

The Ford paint team examines the competition by conducting rigorous side-by-side paint resilience testing to ensure that the vehicle looks as good several years later as it did when it rolled off the assembly line. Additionally, Ford engineers are developing new techniques and processes that benefit consumers as well as the environment.

For example, the upcoming 2009 Lincoln MKS uses an industry-leading pigment named Tuxedo Black. Ford owners will get a vehicle that shimmers, shines and is exceedingly scratch resistant; and from an environmental standpoint, Tuxedo Black will be the first paint to contain flakes derived from glass rather than metal.

Recently, Ford has also unveiled two other paint application innovations:

  • A new eco-friendly anti-corrosion system that uses a zirconium oxide vehicle bath to help prevent rust and corrosion. Not only does it cut paint shop water use nearly in half, but it also reduces the production of sludge by an impressive 90 percent. Currently in use at Twin Cities Assembly plant, the new process will be installed in all North American plants within the next 18 months.

  • A three-part wet application process that reduces CO2 emissions by 15 percent. Ford lab tests show that the solvent-borne paint used in this process provides better long-term resistance to chips and scratches than water-borne paint.

MKS Luxury Design

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Raising the Bar for Full-Sized Luxury Sedan Style.

Lincoln MKS

Timeless design, a fuel-efficient powertrain, industry-first conveniences and an irresistible price are the hallmarks of the Lincoln MKS. The exterior design features a sleek, athletic design including a double-wing grille, dramatic C-pillars, and wide wheels and tires, giving the Lincoln MKS a confident stance.

Luxury carries through the interior as well, with abundant space. Drivers will appreciate the MKS symmetrical instrument panel that has fewer break lines than any other luxury vehicle, for a clean design flow. Passengers can relax in the largest rear cabin in its class including head, leg and shoulder room.

To be sure, accents such as real woods and leather are sumptuous, but not at the expense of the environment. Vegetable dyes, a chromium-free tanning process and reclaimed wood help ensure that the MKS is as eco-friendly as it is customer-friendly.

Other evidence of the unmistakable Lincoln MKS quality of design include:

  • Independent rear suspension design that maximizes suspension travel and ensures more precise suspension tuning

  • SYNC, a voice-activated in-car communication and entertainment system that fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players, providing customers hands-free cell phone and music selection capabilities.

  • SIRIUS Travel Link provides drivers and their passengers with the comfort of up-to-the-minute information and entertainment content, including real-time traffic information, current gas prices, weather forecasts, sports scores and movie listings.

  • Adaptive headlamps and standard HID lamps that enhance nighttime visibility by pivoting the left headlamp up to five degrees and the right headlamp up to 15 degrees to increase the driver’s field of vision.

  • Intelligent Access with Push Button Start that allows drivers to enter their vehicle through the use of a special fob, without ever having to fiddle for a key.

  • Rain-sensing wipers activate at the first drop of rain and are easily programmed for driver preferences.

Smooth Efficient Power

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008
The Lincoln MKS powertrain delivers power and fuel economy in equal measure.

Lincoln MKS

Under the hood of the new Lincoln MKS lies the exclusive new 3.7-liter V-6 engine, offering a comfortable drive and fuel efficiency. The powertrain was derived from the proven 3.5-liter V-6 found in the Lincoln MKX, which was voted one of Ward’s 10-Best Engines for 2007. In less than a year after launch, the Lincoln MKS will also be the first vehicle to offer Ford’s EcoBoost, a new gasoline turbo direct injection engine technology that offers the power of a V-8 engine with the fuel efficiency of a V-6.

The strong, die-cast aluminum block and lightweight four-valve heads assure drivers smooth operation at high RPMs. Meanwhile, the premium engine delivers 273 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque. The increased torque gives MKS customers improved performance when it’s needed most – accelerating and passing.

The 6-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift means that MKS owners can count on smoother shifts, better fuel economy and the option to manually select gears. When it comes to filling-up, the Easy Fuel Capless Fuel Filler System automatically seals the gas tank shut, reducing evaporative emissions that cause smog, pollution and global warning.

EcoBoost Lowers Annual Fuel Costs

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

EcoBoost Engine Technology Will Save Customers Hundreds in Annual Fuel Costs

Lincoln MKS

Ford's EcoBoost engine technology uses gasoline turbocharged direct-injection technology to deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy. With gasoline prices rising, that 20 percent can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars remaining in customers' wallets.

Using an average fuel price of $3.25 a gallon and estimated 15,000 miles driven, an EcoBoost V-6 engine will save customers about $340 a year in fuel costs compared with driving a V-8. And customers don't have to give up performance to save at the pump. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 produces an estimated 340-horsepower and 340 ft.-lbs. of torque, which is more power and torque than usually found in a V-8 engine of approximately 4.6-liters.

The Lincoln MKS will debut Ford's EcoBoost technology in 2009. Within five years, Ford will be producing over half a million EcoBoost-powered Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles annually in North America. That all adds up to a significant impact on fuel consumption and on the driver’s wallet.
