Your Family Will Thank You

Thinking about replacing that crusty old mini-van, and want a new ride that your spouse and kids won’t groan about getting into? According to Kelley Blue Book’s editors there are 10 family haulers that deserve your consideration, and here are three of their favorites: the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2010 Ford Taurus and 2010 Ford Flex.

“While the product landscape in the new-car world seems ever-changing, the vehicle needs of the typical American family remain fairly constant; capable versatility, value, safety and economical factors usually remain top-of-mind,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.

“Best hybrid experience on the road”

2010 Ford Fusion
Nerad says the Ford Fusion Hybrid is a top pick for families because it saves money at the pump, keeps everyone entertained with the latest Ford SYNC® technology, and scores high in terms of ride and handling.

“The Ford Fusion Hybrid doesn’t scream its hybrid-ness to the multitudes,” he said. “Instead, it provides what many of us at Kelley Blue Book feel is the best hybrid experience on the road. We love the way the Fusion Hybrid rides and handles, and we applaud its innovative dash and environmental credentials.”

“A visually striking technological tour de force”

Your Family Will Thank You

Nerad says customers in the market for a family car should also consider the Ford Taurus because it delivers features that American families will appreciate.

“What was once merely a competent full-size sedan has transformed into a visually striking technological tour de force,” he said. “With features uncommon in its segment, a roomy cabin, cavernous trunk, and nimbleness that belies its size, the redesigned Ford Taurus is a family car that pleases everyone, including the driver.”

“A great transcontinental family tourer”

2010 Ford Flex
Nerad says if the editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com had to pick an overall winner from the “Top 10 Family Cars for 2010,” the Ford Flex might get the nod.

“The Ford Flex leaves plain-vanilla crossovers behind with its distinctive styling, and it has all the comfort and convenience features required to be a great transcontinental family tourer while performing equally well in getting the kids to softball practice,” he said. “It drives better than some midsize sedans, offers comfortable seating for seven, and boasts a long list of available interior amenities including an array of infotainment features and even a small refrigerator.”

Can You Get the High Score?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010
Game on! The 2010 Ford Taurus takes a giant leap into cyberspace today, starring in a new online interactive game that takes product placement in casual gaming to the next level by fully integrating the vehicle and its technology and features into the gaming experience.

The game, “White Collar: Chasing the Shadow,” is an extension of the critically acclaimed USA NETWORK drama “White Collar,” which follows a con artist and FBI agent who team up to catch bad guys. The Taurus is not only featured prominently in the television series but now in a new online game that allows players – acting as FBI trainees – to drive the Taurus and use its features to catch a notorious villain dubbed “The White Shadow.”

What makes this initiative unique is that the 2010 Taurus isn’t just along for the ride. The new and class-exclusive technologies in the Taurus are used to interpret clues and collect evidence.

For example, players use the Ford SYNC technology to access text messages that contain important crime-solving tips.

Online game product placement: Kicking it up a notch
Product placement in online games is not new for Ford, but the depth of the Taurus integration in “White Collar: Chasing the Shadow” is.

Ford is continually looking for ways to extend partnerships – like the one with USA NETWORK – in meaningful ways.

If you would like to experience the Taurus in the new online game, please visit http://chasingtheshadow.usanetwork.com/ and click on the “games” tab at the top of the page.

Quotes
“Features like SYNC, SecuriCode, Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning are used in the online game as they would be by a real-world consumer, and they seamlessly contribute to the game’s plot and puzzles. The game also is episodic in nature, giving players the ability to come back and solve new puzzles weekly and vary the ways in which they interact with the Taurus.”
– Connie Fontaine, Ford Brand Content & Alliances Manager

“This is a more immersive, realistic and storytelling-based experience that is more closely aligned with television and movie product integration,” he said. “It raises the bar by providing realistic environments and compelling game play that showcases the Taurus and its features to consumers.”
– Jonathan Beebe, Taurus Digital Marketing Manager

“What we really liked about creating the online game with USA is that it not only introduces Taurus to millions of consumers through the popularity of online gaming but provides them with a very engaging way to experience the innovative technology and features in the new Taurus.”
– Jeff Eggen, Ford Car Experiential Marketing Manager

Blue Book Be Lovin’ Them Some Taurus

Friday, December 11th, 2009
The Taurus Blue Book

For the second consecutive year, Ford has captured Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com “Best Redesigned Vehicle” award, this time for the hot-selling Taurus sedan. Last year, the honor went to the 2009 Ford F-150.

In addition to its expressive, upscale design and engaging driving dynamics, the 2010 Ford Taurus offers an unprecedented array of technologies typically reserved for luxury cars at a price that is affordable. Its impressive standard and available technologies add convenience, connectivity, safety and value for customers. These include Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Warning with Brake Support, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert, MyKey™ parental programmability, Ford SYNC® and Voice-Activated Navigation with SIRIUS Travel Link™.

Today’s recognition from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com is the latest in a string of accolades for the 2010 Ford Taurus. Earlier this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Taurus was named International Car of the Year, and it received kbb.com “2010 Best Resale Value Award” in the full-size car category. And in January, the 2010 Taurus will serve as the official car of the 2010 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show®) in Las Vegas.

For more information about the 2010 Best Redesigned Vehicle from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, please visit www.kbb.com/best2010redesign.

Quotes
“This is not your father’s Taurus. For us it’s a massive departure. It reinvigorates a brand that everybody wants to be proud of, applaud, and be excited about. It’s the whole package – great value, great build quality and great technology. We at Kelley Blue Book couldn’t help but embrace the new Taurus.”
– James Bell, Executive Market Analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com

“What’s amazing about the Taurus is that it just bristles with technology at such a responsible and very acceptable price point. I think that’s what makes it somewhat revolutionary.”
– James Bell, Executive Market Analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com

“Just like the 1986 original, the new Taurus is redefining the full-size sedan segment. It is creating a halo effect in our showroom and attracting younger, more diverse customers to the Ford brand.”

You Know You Be Lovin’ My Taurus Bling

2010 Ford Taurus - Headlights

Ask any fashionista, and she'll tell you: Don't even think about wearing those chandelier earrings with shorts and tennis shoes. No way. There are, after all, certain rules that apply to fashion and accessories. Ask Earl Lucas, exterior design manager for the 2010 Taurus, and he'll tell you those same accessorizing rules apply even if you're designing a sophisticated sedan. Just like a person, every car has a personality and an image to convey, says the former jewelry designer. The "accessories," which in this case are the headlamps of the 2010 Ford Taurus, must be designed and detailed to project the proper image. The Taurus is a confident, well-balanced car. It has the jewelry to match.

Blending form and function
Headlamps can be beautiful, but if they don't light the way, it doesn't matter what they look like. Headlamps must meet certain government and engineering specifications in terms of illumination and reflection, and it all has to fit within a finite space.

The lamps themselves break down into three components – but there's nothing that says the components can't be beautifully detailed. Starting from the inside, tapering outward into the fenders, these include the turn signal lamp, projector beam and side marker light. Thanks to a sophisticated internal switch, one lens executes both high- and low-beam function. The technology within allows for more aesthetic appeal with no compromise on headlamp function.

Beneath the projection canister, the lower surface features functional louvers, which allow ventilation to cool the projector bulb. Amber side markers finish the lamp, with a graceful character line across the lens that leads into the fender. When illuminated, these lamps lead with a hot spot that gracefully fades away. Each component inside the lamp has a distinct shape, offering sculptural enhancements embellished with subtle lines – all designed to draw the eye toward the upscale grille.

In all, there are three finishes in the headlamp. In terms of value – or what the customer will notice first – they are chrome, satin and black plastic imbued with metallic flake. There are also two grains offering textural relief: a lighter satin and a velvet etch, which provide a rougher, sandblasted-type contrast to the edging.

Adding the proper accessories, or how the Taurus got its jewelry
This year, fashion designers and trend-watchers are talking about bold jewelry, accessories that make a statement, tell a story, get remembered. And we'll see them, of course. Because there's always that woman in the room who's confident, tasteful and perfectly accessorized. Just like the Taurus.

Designer Earl Lucas applied chrome sparingly to the 2010 Ford Taurus, using it only on choice components in the headlamps, the side vent and across the bottom front mouth of the SHO and Limited edition.

"On the Taurus, we used quiet elements of chrome," Lucas said. "This is a very tall car. You don't want to put chrome everywhere – you would lose the value. You do it in key spots, to get attention. Anything you put chrome on, that will get attention. The Taurus is a confident car; it doesn't need that much extra attention."

Making the switch from jewelry design to industrial design isn't quite the jump it seems, Lucas says. Balance, form and function all play major roles in designing, whether you're designing vehicles or earrings, he said. "You start with a mass, a shape. You have an image. Then you layer, you accessorize. Good lines, good proportions and proper detailing are what set your product apart."

Quotes
“I love working with metal, all kinds of metal, be it sheet metal or precious metal. I still design jewelry. I love seeing how something small, the tiniest detail, something impossibly ornate, can make such a big difference. Whether you're designing a car or jewelry, you're using the same principles.”
– Earl Lucas, 2010 Ford Taurus Exterior Design Manager

2010 FORD TAURUS FEATURES EXCLUSIVE CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
Cross Traffic Alert and Reverse Sensing System

Available this summer, Ford’s new 2010 Taurus will start at $25,995 – the same price as 2009 models but with more class-leading features, new technologies and perceived quality that rivals German luxury sedans. A wide selection of optional customer-focused technologies also will be available on the 2010 Taurus including Cross Traffic Alert.

This industry-exclusive system leverages the existing BLIS technology functions only while the vehicle is in reverse and warns when cross-traffic appears within three car widths. Watch a video demonstration of Cross Traffic Alert.

How it Works: Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™)

The feature uses two multiple-beam radar modules, the same used with Cross Traffic Alert, which are packaged in the rear quarter panels – one per side. The radar identifies when a vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone and illuminates an indicator light on the corresponding sideview mirror, providing a warning that a vehicle is approaching.

How it Works: Cross Traffic Alert

Working in conjunction with Blind Spot information System (BLIS™), Cross Traffic Alert warns the driver of impending traffic while backing out of a parking spot. Cross Traffic Alert utilizes the blind spot system’s two multiple-beam radar modules. It can pick up an object moving at up to 18 miles per hour within a 65-foot range – or three parking spaces – from either the left or right side of the vehicle. When cross traffic is approaching, two warnings are given: an indicator lights up in the corresponding outside mirror and an audible alert is sounded. The radar also works when backing out of angled parking spaces because its view is wider than just strictly sensing traffic coming at a 90-degree angle.

TAURUS NAMED ESQUIRE’S INAUGURAL “CAR OF THE YEAR”

Friday, June 12th, 2009

The 2010 Ford Taurus SHO earned Esquire’s editors’ unanimous choice for men to drive, every day.

2010 Ford Taurus SHO

The popular men’s magazine Esquire cited the vehicle’s performance, stylish looks and attainable price tag as some of the key factors in their decision to name the 2010 Taurus SHO as its inaugural Car of the Year. The Taurus SHO was up against some of the best luxury sedans in the industry as Esquire magazine editors evaluated nearly a dozen significant new cars. The article appears in the magazine's July issue, on newsstands now.

The sports sedan is powered by its "Super High Output" (SHO), Ford's most powerful EcoBoost twin turbocharged engine. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ V-6 engine delivers V-8 levels of power – delivering 365 horsepower – without compromising its V-6 fuel economy. The Taurus SHO will be available later this summer, starting at $37,995, including destination fees.

QUOTES

"We're thrilled and honored with this award. Taurus – and the SHO model honored here – are Ford's flagship sedans. We trust that customers will be equally impressed." - Frank Davis, Executive Director, Ford North American Product Programs

"We had three main criteria in selecting the Esquire Car of the Year. The vehicle needed to be a pleasure to drive and be capable of shortening your breath when you slam down the pedal. It needed to be gorgeous and aggressive, capable of eliciting stares and gawks. And it needed to be attainable – a vehicle that most men actually can buy and drive. The new Taurus SHO nailed all of these parameters." - David Granger, Esquire’s Editor-in-Chief

"The reason we care about the new Taurus can be boiled down to four words: Looks good, goes fast. With a 3.5-liter turbo V-6, dubbed EcoBoost™, you get V-8 power with V-6 fuel economy. The SHO is a sleeper – a vehicle you can live with every day, that happens to have a secret under the hood." - Ezra Dyer, Esquire Automotive Correspondent

We will keep the momentum going as we strive to become the clear global quality leader.”

FORD TAURUS SHOWS SAFETY LEADERSHIP

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Ford Taurus demonstrates safety leadership in deliberate crash into a 1 million pound wall at 35 mph.

2010 Ford Taurus Center Console

The Taurus – rated ‘Top Safety Pick’ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – was crash tested at Ford’s testing facilities in Dearborn, Mich., to show what needs to happen in 100 milliseconds, or about a tenth of a second, from start to finish.

In that brief span of time, safety belt pretensioners tighten the belt, frontal air bags are inflated to the appropriate level, and the forces of the crash are being deflected by the structure of the vehicle designed specifically to help protect occupants inside.

The IIHS also gave Taurus top marks – “Good” ratings – for frontal, side and rear impacts. Highlights of the Ford Taurus safety story include:

  • Safety Canopy™ – Ford’s exclusive side impact protection system, featuring side curtain airbags that helps protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollovers and side impact crashes.

  • SPACE –An acronym for Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement architecture, Ford’s SPACE helps protect occupants using a configuration of strategically placed long steel rails and square tubes under the car body that create 10 different “crush zones” that help channel crash forces away from the occupants inside.

  • AdvanceTrac® – An electronic stability control system that can predict the vehicle’s intentions using a sensor to detect and measure oversteer and yaw by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When the system senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help keep the car tracking safely on its intended path.

  • Ford’s Belt-Minder® – A safety belt reminder technology for the driver and front passenger that takes over after the initial safety belt reminder stops chiming. If the driver or front passenger remains unbuckled, the system chimes and flashes a warning lamp for six seconds every 30 seconds for five minutes or until the driver buckles up, whichever comes first.

  • Personal Safety System™ – A suite of seven protection technologies working together as a system to help protect occupants, including dual-stage front air bags and occupant classification.

Quotes

“We want people to see what happens in the blink of an eye. We want to open people’s eyes that not all cars are created equal when it comes to safety. There is a difference and we want to show why Taurus is the safest rated large sedan sold in America.”
- Stephen Kozak, Ford North American Safety Chief Engineer

Ford’s Domestic Brand Quality on the Rise

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Ford’s Domestic Brand Quality in Statistical Dead Heat with Toyota and Honda for 2008 Model Year

Ford Quality - GQRS Survey

Ford Motor Company’s surging domestic quality is now equal to the best in the industry for the 2008 model year, according to the latest U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study.

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles collectively reduced “things gone wrong” (TGW) by 7.7 percent compared to last year and are now statistically equivalent with Honda (including Acura) and Toyota (including Lexus and Scion) atop the list of seven major automakers in the survey.

”This is One Ford at its best. It's taken thousands of people continuously working together with laser-like focus every day to boost vehicle quality for our customers to the top of the pack,” said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. “But this is a never-ending journey. The goal now is to distance ourselves from our top competitors. We want to be the sole quality leader."

Other highlights:

  • The 2008-launched Ford F-Series Super Duty and the Lincoln Mark LT ranked first in their respective segments in both TGW and customer satisfaction.

  • Ford Mustang GT 500 topped the sports car category in fewest TGW.

  • Overall, 18 of 24 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles recorded TGW improvements.

  • Ford's newly launched Focus improved significantly in TGW and customer satisfaction, now equaling the Toyota Corolla in both categories.

  • The Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan are significantly better in TGW than the Toyota Camry, which they tied in customer satisfaction.

  • Ford ranked best in class for TGW performance in the functional areas of Vehicle Engineering and Electrical among major manufacturers.

The 2008 model-year GQRS survey, conducted for Ford by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., solicits feedback on vehicle trouble and customer satisfaction from owners of all major makes and models after three months in service.

Second to None in Initial Quality

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Ford/Lincoln/Mercury quality increases by 8 percent and customer satisfaction up to 77 percent in GQRS study.

Ford's New-Model Quality Center

Ford/Lincoln/Mercury is now in statistical tie with Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus/Scion according to the first quarter 2008 U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study. The study, which is conducted by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, surveys customers of all major automotive makes and models on car troubles and asks owners to rate their overall satisfaction with their three-month-old vehicles.

With a combined average of 1,284 things-gone-wrong (TGW) per 1,000 vehicles during the first three months of ownership, Ford’s domestic brands improved 8 percent versus last year. This performance is statistically equivalent to the 1,250 TGW level of Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus/Scion.

Some other key findings from the GQRS report include:

  • Ford/Lincoln/Mercury’s customer satisfaction rating has also risen to 77 percent.

  • The new 2008 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable both recorded quality levels that equate to less than one problem per vehicle, as did the Volvo S80 (947).

  • The Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ were close, with 1,030 TGW and 1065 TGW, respectively.

  • Taurus showed a 33 percent quality improvement compared with the product it replaced.

  • The new Ford Escape improved 16 percent over the out-going model, and the new Ford Focus improved 13 percent.

  • 36 of 40 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo and Mazda nameplates improved this year versus 2007.

  • Ford earned best-in-class honors for interiors and electrical, two important engineering functions.

  • Ford tied for best-in-class in two other functions, paint and vehicle engineering, which includes such areas as ride and handling and cabin quietness.

When it comes to TGW, customer satisfaction or both, a total of 15 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles ranked in the top three of their respective segments. Segment leader models are:

  • Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – TGW for sports car

  • Ford Taurus – customer satisfaction for large car

  • Ford Sport Trac – customer satisfaction for medium traditional utility

  • Mercury Milan – TGW for midsize car

  • Lincoln Navigator – TGW and customer satisfaction for large premium utility
