The 2010 Ford Flex and the award-winning 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid have been named 2010 All-Stars by AUTOMOBILE Magazine, one of America's leading automotive lifestyle publications.
The AUTOMOBILE Magazine All-Stars are chosen by the AUTOMOBILE Magazine staff, its worldwide bureau chiefs and its contributors, following an intensive test drive of the year's most innovative and important new cars. Winners are selected based on design, value and performance, driving enjoyment and the vehicle's ability to redefine an existing category or create a new market segment.
The 2010 Ford Flex: Turning heads today and tomorrow
This year marks the second consecutive win for the Ford Flex. Last year, AUTOMOBILE Magazine described the 2009 model as a "class act among people movers."
In addition to being named one of AUTOMOBILE Magazine's 2010 All-Stars, the 2010 Ford Flex was recently singled out for the 2009 "Collectible Vehicle of the Future" award from the Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC). Members of the organization, which supports the world-famous automotive collection at the Detroit Public Library, predict Flex will be the vehicle most likely to turn heads at the Woodward Dream Cruise of 2034. Ford's unique crossover has been turning heads since its introduction in 2007.
For 2010, the Flex offers outstanding fuel economy in the full-size crossover segment with 17 mpg city/24 highway and an unsurpassed 20 mpg combined. It also offers a twin-turbocharged, direct-injected 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, an auto-fold 60/40 second-row split bench seat, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel and the Ford-exclusive MyKey™ technology, which allows owners to program a maximum top speed – and radio volume – to encourage safe operation by teen drivers.
Banner year for 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid
2009 has been a banner year for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. In addition to being named one of AUTOMOBILE Magazine's 2010 All-Stars, America's most fuel-efficient midsize sedan was honored as one of CAR and DRIVER magazine's "10Best" cars for 2010, and the entire Fusion lineup captured the prestigious MOTOR TREND Car of the Year award. The Fusion Hybrid also is a finalist for North American Car of the Year.
Despite the slump in overall industry sales, Fusion sales are at an all-time high for 2009, with the Fusion Hybrid accounting for almost 20 percent of total Fusion retail sales. And more than 60 percent of Fusion sales have been to customers coming from import brands – mostly Toyota and Honda.
Additional awards and accolades for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid include:
"Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Quotes
"The level of excellence found during our annual All-Stars competition was at an all-time high and the competition was strong, despite the auto industry coming off its worst year in recent history. We whittled down a list of 39 finalists to the 10 All-Stars, and the end results produced a list of true standouts."
– Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine
"For 2010, Ford has equipped the Flex with its much-anticipated EcoBoost™ engine, thereby addressing the Flex's only weakness – power – and effectively transforming it from a well-rounded family hauler into a large sport wagon. The Flex is unique in a market brimming with compromised, look-alike utility vehicles and is one of the best-handling full-size crossovers on the market."
– Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine
"Its very ordinariness is what makes the Fusion Hybrid an AUTOMOBILE Magazine All-Star. The Fusion Hybrid is not a performance machine, but neither does it feel hobbled or inadequate for daily driving. Perhaps the best thing about it is that, apart from the LCD color screens, you might never know you're driving a hybrid."
– Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine
The Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC) have predicted that, among America’s new cars and trucks launched in 2009, the Ford Flex will become the most desired by future car collectors.
Members of the organization, which supports the world-famous automotive collection at the Detroit Public Library, vote annually to predict the “Collectible Vehicle of the Future” from the year’s new American-built cars and trucks. The Ford Flex was selected from eight all-new vehicles launched in 2009.
The award was presented to Ford executives by the Friends of the NAHC at their annual holiday reception on Thursday, Dec. 10 at NAHC quarters in the Skillman Branch Library in downtown Detroit.
The NAHC is the world’s largest public archive of automotive lore and a treasure for automotive historians, journalists and collectors. Its collection of books, manuals, photos, company histories and historic documents is open to the public.
Among recent previous winners were the 2005 Ford Mustang and 2002 Ford Thunderbird.
Quotes
“This selection is unique among all the ‘Vehicle of the Year’ awards, because it is selected by car buffs who know what future collectors will value. We asked our members to predict which of this year’s new vehicles will turn heads in the Woodward Cruise of 2034.”
– Charles K. Hyde, Chairman of the NAHC Board of Trustees
“We are delighted that the Ford Flex has been recognized by the NAHC as having a design that will become a collectible of the future. We knew from the start that we had a vehicle with stand-out design that looks like nothing else on the road, but that also meets the needs of our customers looking for passenger space with innovative technology and great fuel economy,” she said. “Reaction from our customers has been fantastic and we hope they will enjoy their cars long into the future.”

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Flex and Shelby GT500® – everybody wants these vehicles, including the editors of Edmunds Inside Line. For the 2010 Inside Line Editors Most Wanted Awards, F-150 SVT Raptor and Flex with EcoBoost™ snagged honors for Overall Excellence, and Shelby GT500 was named this year’s Instant Classic.
The awards are chosen, quite simply, as the name states – they’re the vehicles the editors of the magazine want the most. The only stipulation is that they must have been tested by the magazine before Nov. 1. Then the editors gather together to vote on which vehicles they would be willing to spend their own money on.
About the winners
The 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor was designed as a purpose-built, high-speed off-road truck ready for adventure, and it’s also versatile enough to handle the daily commute. Key enablers to Raptor’s exceptional performance are functional design cues and impressive suspension technology. Internal triple bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – the first on a production truck – provide position-sensitive damping and extra suspension travel for extreme high-speed off-roading and a smooth ride on the road.
Ford Flex turns heads with its distinctive design and its available twin-turbocharged direct-injected 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. This all-new engine gives Flex the power and performance feel of a V-8 with the fuel economy of a standard V-6. It’s not just the room for seven and myriad interior storage options that have Flex owners raving. Flex is also packed with available innovative, class-leading technology solutions.
The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 delivers the most power and refinement ever for a Ford SVT-tuned performance Mustang – and a few surprises, too. The more powerful 2010 Shelby GT500 has horsepower increased to 540 and torque increased to 510 ft.-lb., as well as downforce increased and drag reduced. New gearbox enhancements plus a standard 3.55:1 rear axle ratio mean the 2010 Shelby GT500 will deliver improved acceleration performance while providing better highway fuel efficiency – up to 2 mpg compared to the 2009 model.
Quotes
“Instead of awarding five sports cars every year, we award a mix of vehicles that people need every day. We feel that the Flex with EcoBoost and F-150 SVT Raptor are affordable vehicles that anyone would be proud to drive – they stand out amongst their peers for 2010. The Shelby GT500 is a vehicle with a certain timelessness to engineering and design that people will appreciate for decades to come. We think it’s the car we’ll be shopping for on eBay for years and years.”
– Scott Oldham, Editor-in-chief of Edmunds Inside Line
“We’re honored that three of our vehicles were chosen. These three vehicles are shining examples of our exciting lineup, and we’re always gratified when the media take notice.”
– Ken Czubay, Ford Vice President, Marketing
It’s no wonder that the single biggest demographic for energy drinks also goes for Ford’s EcoBoost™ engine technology. EcoBoost is driving younger, more affluent customers to Ford showrooms. And many of these buyers are hot to trade in their competitive-make vehicles to get their hands on one equipped with the fuel-efficient direct-injection turbocharged EcoBoost engine.
SHO-ing off
Living proof is the all-new Ford Taurus SHO, with EcoBoost as standard. The average SHO buyer is 54 years old – 10-plus years younger than the base-model Taurus customer – and second youngest in its segment. The median household income of the SHO buyer is $20,000 more than the base Taurus customer. And as for conquests, nearly 55 percent of buyers are trading in Toyota Avalons, Nissan Altimas and Chevy Monte Carlos, among other competitive products, to drive away in a Taurus SHO. That’s the second-highest conquest rate in the segment.
Moreover, Taurus SHO customers want more and are willing to spend more to get it. Ford is seeing transaction rate improvements as EcoBoost buyers tend to package more options in their purchase, and the vehicles are selling with fewer incentives.
Taurus SHO has the highest average transaction price in the segment, with customers paying $10,000 or more above base-model price to enjoy not only the fuel efficiency and performance of the EcoBoost engine, but other premium package amenities such as all-wheel drive, Ford SYNC®, 19-inch wheels and a reverse sensing system.
EcoBoost spread
Other vehicles that offer EcoBoost, such as the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS, are exhibiting other demographic phenomena.
Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost – along with Taurus SHO – is helping attract more 35- to 55-year-old males, a demographic the company has been working hard to bring back to the Ford fold. Ford sedans with EcoBoost are improving traffic with this demographic that has eluded Ford in recent years, says Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager. This group of shoppers, in fact, represents nearly 35 percent of Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost buyers, which is more than 5 percentage points higher than the MKS equipped with the 3.7-liter engine. For Taurus SHO, it’s above 40 percent, more than double the 35- to 55-year-old males that purchase a base-model Taurus.
Other customers making the jump to Ford vehicles are hitting the Flex with EcoBoost equally hard; three out of four buyers are trading in a competitive product, including the Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia and Chevy Traverse.
More with EcoBoost
EcoBoost technology incorporates direct injection and turbocharging, allowing for the downsizing of engines, to provide customers with up to a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy and 15 percent reduction in emissions versus larger-displacement engines. With the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, customers can expect V-8 performance but V-6 fuel efficiency.
Sales of Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost-equipped vehicles have already exceeded company projections, with October sales twice as high as September.
Ford will complement the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine with the launch of new 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder variants next year, which will be offered on several global Ford products, including midsize and large vehicles.
Quotes
“EcoBoost technology is helping bring in a new customer to Ford dealer showrooms. This customer is younger, more affluent, and more often trades in competitive products.”
– Amy Marentic, Ford Group Marketing Manager
“No one else offers the level of performance and versatility of Flex with EcoBoost. It’s a compelling buy in the crossover segment for customers who are looking for the power and performance of a traditional V-8 but do not want to sacrifice this for fuel economy.”
– Kate Pearce, Flex Marketing Manager
Cowboy hats, chili cook-offs and Ford trucks – some things just never go out of style in the Lone Star state.
The 2010 Ford F-150, powered by the all-new SVT Raptor, was named 2009 “Truck of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA), the seventh consecutive time a Ford F-Series truck has won the award. Additionally, F-150 SVT Raptor was named best “Full-size Pickup Truck.”
Ford trucks also took the “Truck Line of Texas,” a distinguished honor recognizing the best-in-class capability and durability of Ford’s lineup.
Another top honor, “Outstanding Feature,” went to Ford Work Solutions, a suite of productivity technologies developed for the commercial truck owner. The system includes an in-dash computer that connects with the home office; Tool Link that keeps track of costly tools and equipment; Cable Lock, which locks up tools in the open truck box; and Crew Chief, a telematics system, giving the fleet manager more control of his/her fleet of vehicles.
Class-leading capability
Ford F-150 delivers class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds – a combination no other competitor can match.
With the launch of the all-new 2009 model, the truck improved its fuel economy by an average of 8 percent across the entire lineup, thanks to a wide range of engineering enhancements. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume three-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. Plus, the F-150’s SFE package – which is available on highest-volume XL and XLT series – delivers unsurpassed fuel economy of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
This summer, Ford introduced the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor, designed as a purpose-built, high-speed off-road truck ready for adventure. Raptor also is versatile enough to handle the daily commute. To test the capability and durability of Raptor, Ford took a modified pre-production Raptor to the grueling 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 this past November. The early-build Raptor not only survived Baja, it earned a podium finish in its class.
Key enablers to the Raptor’s impressive performance are functional design cues and impressive suspension technology. The Raptor is seven inches wider than a base F-150 to make room for the additional suspension components that give Raptor its off-road abilities. The wider stance also gives the truck an aggressive appearance.
Internal triple-bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – the first on a production truck – provide position-sensitive damping and extra suspension travel for extreme off-roading and a smooth ride on the road. In addition to the shocks, Raptor has unique cast-aluminum front control arms and SVT-tuned 35-inch BFGoodrich® All-Terrain TA/KO 315/70-17 tires. These components give Raptor 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches of rear suspension travel.
The F-150 SVT Raptor comes standard with the proven 5.4-liter SOHC V-8 engine that produces up to 320 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. In early 2010 customers will have the option of an even more powerful new 6.2-liter V-8 engine.
Customer anticipation has been extremely high, with 3,000 orders already received for the 5.4-liter F-150 SVT Raptor. In fact, initial dealer orders have the Dearborn Truck Plant building Raptors at maximum capacity, reflecting the strong demand for the first-ever factory high-speed off-road truck.
Starting price for the F-150 SVT Raptor is $38,995 including destination and delivery charges.
In total, Ford won eight of 18 awards, including Lincoln MKX as “Mid-size CUV,” Ford Flex as “Full-size CUV,” and Ford F-150 King Ranch as “Luxury Pick-up Truck,” and Ford Expedition as “Full-size SUV.”

Quote
“Winning the Truck of Texas is a distinct honor. Texans know their trucks, and this award is further proof of why the F-Series remains America’s number-one selling pickup. We built F-150 SVT Raptor for truck enthusiasts. And we’re gratified it’s gaining recognition for both its unequaled off-road performance and confidence-inspiring on-road demeanor.”

5 Minutes for Mom Provides Three-part Series Detailing its Ford Flex Test Drive Experience
Erica Mueller, a writer for 5 Minutes for Mom and founder of Green-Parents.com, took the Ford Flex for a test drive and wrote a three-part series detailing her test drive experience. Erica’s posts give you an in-depth view of the car with a few slide shows and videos showing her perspective on what makes the Flex the perfect “mom car”.
“In a word, the Ford Flex is Impressive. Everything about this vehicle reflects the thought and hard work Ford put into making the Flex their best crossover-SUV!”
When we contacted Jim Lin, of Busy Dad about taking a spring break trip in the Ford Flex, he had a pretty special trip already in mind. Jim’s mom was competing in the Ballroom Dance Nationals in Las Vegas and he needed a vehicle to get him and his family there to support her while she was competing in the finals. She ended up winning two medals and Jim and his family got to Vegas in style!
“My Favorite Thing: The fridge in the middle console. So you lose a potential seat with the fridge, but I would gladly tie an extra passenger to the roofrack to be able to enjoy a cold beverage whenever I want to. Especially in LA, where traffic and heat are a daily challenge. It even has freeze mode -- perfect for keeping specimens from field trips that didn't make the drive home and are starting to smell.
Overall, I have to say I really like the Ford Flex. I wouldn't give up my current car to have one, but my wife would. And has been asking for one ever since Vegas. “
City Mama Says Ford Might Become the “New” American Auto Industries First Success Story After Taking a Ford Flex for a Spin
Photo Credit: Stefania Pomponi Butler, City Mama
Stefania Pomponi Butler (a.k.a City Mama) recently tested the family-friendly features in the Ford Flex on a spring break road trip to Oregon. As a gadget enthusiast , Stephania loved the AC and USB outlets, the Sony Stereo system and the built-in refrigerator, but more importantly she felt that Ford might become the “new” American Auto industries first success story:
“Despite suffering it's worst quarter ever, Ford is a company that is projecting tiny glimmers of hope. If Ford believes in its products enough to put them in the hands of users for honest, unfettered reviews, then that counts for something. They aren't controlling the message or the conversation, and that makes me believe that perhaps they will be listening to feedback from their consumers' (potential and otherwise). Isn't it about time some of these companies started listening? If Ford is going to sell their cars, they'd better be the ones that consumers want. (This consumer wants a leaner, greener, safe car. Not just a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid. And let's talk renewable energy sources while we're at it.)
As far as I can tell, Ford is the only car company that is letting "the people" participate in the future of the company and Ford keeps it up, they just might be the first success story of the new automobile industry.”
A Mama’s Rant Drives a Ford Flex During Spring Break and Tests Out Some of its Family-Friendly Features
Anne-Marie from A Mama’s Rant drove the Flex during her child’s spring break and tested out some of its family friendly features. She determined that the Flex wasn’t quite right for her family’s lifestyle since she only had two children and didn’t need ALL the space, but Anne-Marie did write a very thorough review so you should check it out to see if it might be a good fit for your family’s driving needs! http://www.amamasrant.com/a_mamas_rant/2009/04/ford-flex-mom-road-test.html
Daddy Types Learns a Station Wagon Can Change One’s Life
Greg Allen of Daddy Types, a blog for new dads, took the Ford Flex for a spin to pre-school and said “I took it out for 30 minutes this morning, and I can say without qualification that it changed my life. Instead of walking, I drive the kid to preschool. Though the Flex looks like a station wagon from the outside, inside it feels like an SUV. The doors lock automatically as you roll off.”
Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1 reopens to become first site in the world to produce EcoBoost engines.
Ford invested $55 million for tooling and equipment upgrades at Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, which has been idled since 2007, to build the EcoBoost engine. The powerful, fuel-efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engines represent the cornerstone of Ford’s technology plan to deliver fuel efficiency and performance to millions.
EcoBoost will first be available this summer in the 2010 Lincoln MKS, Lincoln MKT, Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex. Production is slated to begin this spring, with approximately 250 employees forming shifts to build the engine. The employees are a combination of employees who worked in the plant, before it was idled in 2007, and employees from other plants.
Employee training and flexible manufacturing are key components to the success of the Cleveland Engine Plant. Here are some highlights of this two-fold strategy:
Extensive Employee Training
The workforce participated in an intensive three-tier training program aimed at improving quality and empowering employees. The first two phases of training covered basic manufacturing operations and employees learned how to manage their own equipment and work area through “manufacturing work teams” at the plant.
For the final phase, the plant will be working with Cuyahoga Community College. During four weeks of onsite classroom training employees will upgrade skill sets for machining technicians and production team leaders, and will receive 10 credit hours toward an associate’s degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.
Flexible Manufacturing
Outfitted with a flexible manufacturing system for powertrains, featuring modern, Computerized Numerical Control machine tools (CNC machines) the facility can easily be retooled and reprogrammed to perform new tasks with minimal disruption to production.
A new, internal database will ensure quality is built into the engine from the outset. During production, each engine built at the plant will have a sophisticated engine “birth history” that allows plant engineers to trace the precise path taken by any part so any quality control issue can be traced back to its source.
Quotes
“The EcoBoost engine is a strategic product that will provide Ford with a competitive edge. The Cleveland site is thrilled to be delivering an important product for the company. We have an outstanding, specially trained workforce that is committed to delivering a world-class, quality product for our customers.”
- Jan Allman, Cleveland Site Manager
“This training approach not only delivers the technical training to the workforce but also empowers them which is a cultural change from the traditional management-directed system. You’re turning over the keys to the hourly team members to let them do what they need to do to get their jobs done. Each employee, working under a team leader, is responsible for his or her area and they work as a team to deliver a high quality engine.”
- Kevin Heck, Cleveland Engine No. 1 Area Manager
“What we do is primarily teach job skills, so this fits right in with our mission statement. What’s unique about this is we’re doing it in Ford-dedicated workspace; we’re bringing our instructors and our equipment to Ford and we’re offering the credit hours. We, along with Ford, understand the importance of helping people expand their skills and knowledge for the rapidly changing workplace.”
-John Gajewski, Executive Director of Cuyahoga Community College Workforce and Economic Development Division
Ford’s new EcoBoost delivers the performance of a V-8 and the fuel economy of an aspirated V-6.
Under Ford’s global initiative to provide powertrains that deliver fuel efficiency while meeting the power and performance needs customers demand, the first wave of new EcoBoost™ engines make their debut in the Lincoln MKS, MKT and Ford Flex later this year. Here are some key highlights on Ford’s new EcoBoost technology:
Power and fuel economy – The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter Duratec V-6 EcoBoost engine produces 355 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 350 ft.-lb. of torque at 3,500 rpm. A 10-15 percent fuel-economy benefit is expected versus normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 engines in the same competitive class.
Engine – The proven Duratec 3.5-liter V-6 comprises the base engine architecture. To handle the increased torque that EcoBoost delivers, some upgrades were made to some of the components, such as the cylinder block, crankshaft, connecting rods pistons and exhaust valves to ensure the EcoBoost V-6 engine is as robust as possible.
Turbochargers – Two Honeywell GT15 turbochargers with water-cooled bearings and operate in parallel, spinning at approximately 170,000 rpm up to 12 PSI. They are rated for a 150,000-mile, 10-year life.
Direct fuel injection – A cam-driven high-pressure fuel pump feeds the fuel injectors at pressures ranging from 200 to 2,175 PSI (pounds per square inch) depending on customer driving. A typical port fuel injection system operates at pressures of around 60 PSI. Six sprayers in each injector target fuel into the cylinder, resulting in a cleaner and more-efficient fuel burn and better cold-start emissions.
Quotes
“The Duratec 3.5 family is a good example of Ford’s forward planning in terms of powertrain technologies. The engine architecture itself was well protected for high-boost applications, so it didn’t require an extensive durability program. It was in good shape to start with.”
- Brett Hinds, EcoBoost Design Manager
2010 Ford Flex with available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 delivers up to 20 percent better fuel economy.
The first gasoline direct-injection twin-turbocharged engine produced in North America, the 2010 EcoBoost Flex boasts segment-leading fuel economy among full-size performance crossover vehicles with 22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. In fact, the all-new engine gives Flex V-8 power and performance feel with the fuel economy of a V-6, saving customers money. Due to Ford’s significant technological advancements, customers can benefit from fuel efficiency with the seamless power delivery they expect from Flex.
Here are some key facts about Ford Flex and EcoBoost
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers an impressive 355 horsepower and a responsive 350 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad rpm range, simultaneously giving Ford Flex the power of a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 while enjoying V-6 fuel efficiency.
The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine requires all-wheel drive and will be available on well-equipped SEL and Limited models of the 2010 Flex, packaged with several high-demand customer features.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is the first in a wave of EcoBoost engines coming from Ford as part of a strategy to bring major fuel-efficiency improvements to millions.
The key to the EcoBoost system is the harmony between the twin turbochargers and the direct injection fuel system. The turbochargers recover energy from the exhaust that otherwise would’ve been wasted and put it back in the engine to gain efficiency.
By 2013, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American lineup will be available with EcoBoost.
Quotes
“We are committed to delivering fuel economy leadership in every new vehicle. We do this with affordable technology that can be applied to the widest number of vehicles. EcoBoost is an important component of that goal. The beauty of EcoBoost is that it enables us to downsize for fuel efficiency, yet boost for power. We’re able to decrease the size of the available engine – such as installing a V-6 versus a V-8 – yet boost the power using turbocharging to deliver similar power and torque of that larger engine.”
- Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s Group President of Global Product Development
“We know that there are customers who are looking for the power and performance of a traditional V-8 but are not willing to sacrifice this for fuel economy. No one else in this segment offers this level of performance and versatility, and when you wrap it up in Flex’s unique package, we believe that it will offer a compelling buy in the crossover segment.”
- Kate Pearce, Flex Marketing Manager

For the sixth consecutive year, the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) has recognized a Ford truck – the 2009 F-150 – as the one and only “Truck of Texas.” The Ford Flex and Expedition King Range received top honors as CUV and SUV of Texas, respectively. Ford swept all four vehicle-centered top honors and its lineup of trucks was named Truck Line of Texas.
Currently on sale, the new F-150 delivers a fuel economy gain that is up to 12 percent better than the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume three-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. In addition, the F-150 features a towing capacity of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds.
Other Ford Motor Company vehicles winning top honors in their categories at the TAWA Rodeo include:
Best Luxury Pickup: 2009 Ford F-150 King Ranch

Best Mid-Size CUV: 2009 Mazda CX9
Best Luxury CUV: 2009 Lincoln MKX
Best Mid-Size SUV: 2009 Ford Explorer
Best Heavy Duty Pickup: 2009 Ford F-350 Super Duty Cabela’s Edition
Quotes
“This is high praise, especially the coveted ‘Truck of Texas’ top prize. Texas Auto Writers are the toughest truck critics because they know firsthand and truly appreciate how core truck customers really use their pickups. We’re honored that TAWA recognizes that the new F-150 offers consumers class-leading capability, unsurpassed fuel economy and durability that shows how closely we’ve been listening to our customers for the 31 years Ford trucks have been America’s favorite.”
-Mark Fields, Ford’s President of the Americas
“We’re honored that TAWA recognizes that the new F-150 offers consumers class-leading capability, unsurpassed fuel economy and durability that shows how closely we’ve been listening to our customers for the 31 years Ford trucks have been America’s favorite. ‘Truck of Texas’ is really the most important award of its type in the industry. We love trucks down here, and we really use these vehicles everyday. And since we spend so much time in our vehicles, for us it’s not just about how the horse feels being towed, but how your butt feels sitting in the truck, too.”
-Harold Gunn, President of TAWA
Advanced structures, AdvanceTrac help four Ford vehicles earn “Top Safety Picks”
With a total of 16 to date, Ford Motor Company has earned more Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Picks” than any other automaker. Four of Ford’s 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – received the honor, allowing Ford to surpass its closest rival, Honda.
Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the Institute’s crash tests, which requires that vehicles earn the top “good” ratings in the Institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. As well, since 2007, it is required that vehicles must offer electronic stability control.
All four vehicles feature AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. IIHS has stated “stability control significantly reduces crash risk by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers.”
Quotes
“Flex and MKS are built on a platform that has a tremendous safety heritage – one that it shares with the 2009 Ford Taurus, rated America’s safest full-size car. And Fusion and Milan prove that a high level of safety can come in a midsize package.”
- Steve Kozak, Ford’s Chief Engineer for Safety Systems
“Safety is a top purchase consideration, second only to fuel efficiency, so the top safety ratings and competitive fuel economy of Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan are a winning combination.”
- Michael Crowley, Ford North America Car and Crossover Marketing Manager
Ford Leads All Automakers with Most 'Top Safety Picks', Besting Honda in IIHS Crash Tests
Ford Motor Company has earned more "Top Safety Pick" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other automaker with a total of 16 to date. Ford surpassed its closest rival Honda this week when four of its 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – achieved “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford also has more 5-star government crash test ratings than any other automaker.
How They Get Picked
To earn IIHS’s "Top Safety Pick," vehicles must earn the top "good" ratings in the institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. An added requirement since 2007 is that vehicles also must offer electronic stability control.
Helping Drivers Maintain Control
Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the institute’s crash tests, and AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control is available for each vehicle. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When AdvanceTrac® senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help the driver keep the car tracking on its intended path. IIHS has stated that "AdvanceTrac significantly reduces crash risk by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers."
Structural Strength Is a Safety Fundamental
Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan get some of their core strength from the use of lightweight aluminum-coated boron steel – one of the strongest weld-able materials – in the body structure. The use of high-strength steel in the B-pillars is only part of their robust safety profile. Ford engineers also located the side door intrusion beams to help manage and absorb energy during side impact crashes.
Tom Scavo behind the wheel of a 2009 Ford Flex in "Desperate Housewives"
In one of several Ford product integrations coming to television this fall, the 2009 Ford Flex will cruise down Wisteria Lane on ABC's award-winning series "Desperate Housewives."
Ford worked closely with Universal Studios to cast a vehicle that would best match the personality of the character Tom Scavo, played by actor Doug Savant.
Two other Ford vehicles also were chosen on the show -- the new 2009 Lincoln MKS and the 2009 Mazda6.
A new character named Dave Williams will drive the Lincoln MKS and young Andrew Van De Kamp will be the owner of the sporty 2009 Mazda6. The new season begins Sunday, Sept. 28 on ABC.
Quote:
“Tom is the type of guy who wants to be seen in a car that’s different. He doesn’t necessarily belong in a high-end exotic car, yet he needs a vehicle that’s really bold and that stands out. Pairing him up with the Flex was a natural.” - Bob Witter, Ford Global Brand Entertainment
Ford vehicles featured in the new sci-fi drama series, "Fringe."
The latest show from acclaimed Hollywood producer/director J. J. Abrams, who also is the creator of “Lost” and “Alias”, premieres Tuesday September 9 at 8:00/7:00 p.m. on FOX. “Fringe” follows the adventures of a team of FBI paranormal investigators. And, Ford matched each cast members to a vehicle that helped define their character.
FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, played by Anna Torv, will investigate strange occurrences in a 2009 Escape Hybrid. Producers wanted a sexy vehicle for Joshua Jackson’s character Peter Bishop, opting for the Ford Mustang. Rounding out the cast, FBI Special Agent Charlie Francis, played by Kirk Acevedo, and Department of Homeland Security Special Agent Phillip Broyles, played by Lance Reddick will drive the new Ford Fusions. As well, the fleet vehicle for the “Fringe” team is the 2009 Flex.
Quotes
“There is tremendous buzz in Hollywood surrounding this program, and we’re excited to be a part of it. We auditioned three cars – the Escape Hybrid, the new Ford Flex and the Mustang – and the producers wanted them all, plus the Ford Fusion.”
Ross Mackenzie, Ford Global Brand Entertainment
The 2009 Ford Flex is set to roll off the Oakville Assembly line.
At the official launch ceremony on June 3, 2008, Ford announced that its Ford Oakville Assembly Complex (OAC) will be adding 500 new jobs to keep up with the demand for the popular Ford Flex, which arrives in dealerships this summer. Crossover vehicles are part of the fastest-growing vehicle segment in North American this decade.
With a portfolio that includes Ford Flex, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, Ford crossover growth in North American is the fastest in the industry for the last two years.
In the U.S., Ford Edge was the best-selling mid-size crossover in 2007 and is to date in 2008. In Canada, the crossover segment grew 89 percent in 2007 versus the previous year, and Ford of Canada sold more crossovers than any other manufacturer.
Connectivity Solutions Go Beyond Music and Phone Calls
Industry-exclusive Ford SYNC™ is a fully integrated, voice-activated in-car communications and entertainment system that works with most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players. Beginning later this year, SYNC will also provide accident assistance through '911 Assist,' and will be able to send customers Vehicle Health Reports on key systems to help them plan routine service appointments and alert them to critical systems issues.
One might expect this technology to be available only on luxury vehicles, but Ford SYNC will be offered on nearly every Ford and Mercury vehicle and will be standard on Lincoln vehicles in 2008. The 2009 models being added to the SYNC play list include the all-new Ford Flex and F-150; the 2009 Ford Escape, Escape Hybrid and 2009 Ford Expedition. SYNC will be standard equipment on the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS when it launches this summer.
SYNC is Ford's platform for smarter, easily upgradeable in-car connectivity. Already, Ford is moving beyond the music and the mobile phone to master technologies that will also connect customers with the real-time information and services that they want and value while on the road.
SIRIUS Travel Link is a suite of data services that links drivers to traffic and weather information, fuel prices at nearby stations and the most up-to-date sports and entertainment news – along with a 23,000-song personal jukebox. Broadcast through SIRIUS's existing satellite and repeater infrastructure, the exclusive Travel Link feature launches in conjunction with Ford's next-generation navigation system. Watch for it first on the all-new 2009 Lincoln MKS this summer.
The new 2009 F-150 and F-Series Super Duty become true mobile offices with the Ford Work Solutions suite of technological tools for the working professional and commercial driver. In addition to hands-free mobile phone connectivity and voice-activated navigation, Work Solutions allows customers to monitor on-truck tool inventories, access and print documents and review engineering drawings from inside the cab.
The EasyFuel™ Capless Fuel-Filler System eliminates the gas tank screw cap for more simple fuel fill ups. No more gas odor on hands or gloves, or the unwanted amber dash light because the gas cap wasn't screwed on tightly enough.
In addition to eliminating these hassles, EasyFuel helps reduce evaporative emissions that create smog and contribute to global warming. Spring-loaded tabs pull back a flap in the filler neck when the pump nozzle is inserted. When fueling is complete, and the nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.
EasyFuel™ was introduced on the 2008 Ford Explorer. It will be standard equipment on the new Ford F-150, Flex and Lincoln MKS in 2009. The system will be offered on the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury product line by 2010.
Customers get up-to-the-minute information and entertainment content at their fingertips.
SIRIUS Travel Link™ technology provides customers with a valuable tool that can be used daily to get just-in-time details about traffic, current weather conditions, gasoline prices, movie theater details and sports updates. The system will be available on several 2009 models including Ford Flex, F-150, and Lincoln MKS.
Specifically, Travel Link delivers:
Fuel Prices – Customers can pinpoint and organize fuel options from over 120,000 gas stations alphabetically, by distance or by price.
Movies - With Travel Link, Ford owners can access film times, theater locations, ratings and run length details from over 4,500 movie theaters.
Sports - NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NASCAR, NCAAF, NCAAB, and golf scores and schedules are now at customers’ fingertips. Drivers and passengers can customize Travel Link to provide info from selected teams.
Traffic Data – Now drivers can avoid traffic jams with SIRIUS Travel Link’s instant access to real-time traffic speed and flow data with accident and incident updates.
Weather - SIRIUS Travel Link allows Ford customers to stay on top of invaluable weather information including current conditions, five-day forecasts, coast-to-coast weather data and detailed storm cell information, hurricane and tropical storm tracking, local wind speeds, and even ski resort conditions.
The award-winning SYNC in-car communication system is now available to select Navigator customers.
Ford has just released its first dealer-installed SYNC kit that is fully functional, completely seamless and upgradeable to support SYNC features and functions. The installation time is quick, taking under two hours, and at under $550 dollars, the retrofit kit is highly affordable.
Owners of select 2008 Navigator or Navigator L models can get the Ford SYNC retrofit kit installed in vehicles equipped with the Elite Package that includes the voice-activated navigation radio and rear seat DVD. Vehicles must also have been built after December 4, 2007.
There is no need for an add-on HMI or microphone to operate SYNC as the system uses the existing steering wheel button controls and voice-activation functionality connected to the navigation system.
Committed to continually improving in-car connectivity, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle owners that have either factory- or dealer-installed SYNC will be able to upgrade the system's software and access future features and functions. Two new features that will be introduced later in 2009 include:
911 Assist – This free-of-charge accident assistance feature can place a call to a local 911 operator should the air bag deploy. The driver must have a cell phone that is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC.
Vehicle Health Report (VHR) – Customers can stay on top of all vehicle maintenance with a simple voice request at any time. Vehicle owners first set up their personal preferences at the SYNC Web site (www.syncmyride.com).
These types of ongoing innovations have ensured that Ford SYNC is on track to reach 1 million sales in 2009. This summer Ford SYNC will be available to the all-new Ford Flex, F-150 and Lincoln MKS. The 2009 model year Lincoln Navigator, which will launch later this year, will come factory-equipped with SYNC as a standard feature.
Instead of outsourcing seat design, the automotive industry norm, Ford created a dedicated seat engineering team within its Body Engineering division. Three Ford engineers – Qin Pan, Joanna Rakowska and Michael Medoro – spent months working with sophisticated virtual technology to design in-house vehicle seating that maximized both comfort and quality.
For the Ford Flex, the objective was to reflect the quiet luxury of the interior by reducing seat vibration. Using real-world road surface data, the Ford engineers could design mass dampers to counter a variety of road surfaces far earlier than ever before in the development stage.
While the new in-house seating technology has immediate benefits for Flex customers, soon the acquired learning building the F-Family Seats will be applied to a range of Ford vehicles from the Ford Focus to the new Ford F-150.
Flex’s new integrated fridge cools 40 percent faster than home refrigerator.
When designing the Ford Flex’s new in-vehicle refrigerator, Ford engineering created a cooling and freezing unit that not only performed as well as a standard home refrigerator, but was 40 percent faster. In freeze mode the refrigerator unit can chill two half-liter bottles of water from a room temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) to 41 degrees F (5 degrees C) in just two and a half hours.
While compact, the cooling unit holds seven 12-ounce cans, four half-liter bottles, two 20-ounce bottles or various fruits and vegetables. Hermetically sealed and well insulated, the refrigeration compartment keeps beverages or food cold, allowing no more than an 18 degree F (10 degree C) temperature rise over 175 minutes, just a few minutes short of three hours.
The Ford Flex’s new compressor-driven cooler offers customers the option of cooling or freezing, and eliminates the need for bulky post-purchase add-on refrigeration units. By maintaining the same outward console appearance with or without the fridge option, the Ford team designed a back seat console with no compromise to interior design integrity.
Flex roofs as creative canvas to create “Cool Lids” by NY artist Tristan Eaton
Visitors to the New York International Auto Show were witness to a live art performance by street artist and commercial illustrator Tristan Eaton. Throughout the opening weekend Tristan Eaton, founder of the creative agency ThunderDog Studios, used the Flex’s White Suede roof option to create colorful urban art pieces.
Show-goers watched the 29-year-old transform three full-size, sheet metal stampings of the Flex roof. The resulting one-of-a-kind “Cool Lid” art pieces will be on display in Ford’s Flex Studio Gallery from March 21st to 30th, 2008, joining three other previous creations.
The Tristan Eaton event was designed to build on the concept that the Ford Flex is a highly adaptable crossover vehicle that can be customized through a range of factory options including nine paint colors, two-tone roof, all-wheel drive, a multi-panel Vista roof and many other personalized choices.
Fashion designer Anthony Prozzi brings stylish new look to the Flex.
As consumers become more and more sophisticated in their tastes, vehicles are no longer simply in the realm of mobility; today’s customers view vehicles as fashion statements that reflect their lifestyle. The Ford Flex is a convergence of form, function and fashion.
Former high-profile fashion designer, Anthony Prozzi, has drawn on his wealth of experience to create a luxurious upscale look for the Ford Flex. Working with the Ford design team, the New York born-and-bred designer, who has worked as a designer at DKNY and was also a contributing editor at W magazine, created a stylish interior with a fresh combination of colors, textures and materials that directly mirrors how we dress today.
The seating is one of the areas that Prozzi considers “Oscar winning.” Inspired by the timeless appeal of the tweed jacket, Prozzi incorporated a Harris tweed on the panels and seating fabric of the base model. For customers looking to show their appreciation for sophisticated fashion, the luxury model incorporates diamond perforated leather seating with stitching that connotes a fine pinstriped suit.
Another fashionable element in the Ford Flex is the center stack design, or cockpit integrated display – the low-gloss metallic paint gives it an understated elegance with just a bit of jewelry-inspired sparkle. To deliver on the concept that “space is the new luxury” Prozzi created a single visual line that traverses the vehicle’s interior, pushing out the surface and giving the Flex a horizontal flow.
Customers can customize their Flex – from rims to paint and beyond.
The clean, simple and yet bold exterior of the 2009 Ford Flex will impress everyone on the road with its signature horizontal three-bar chrome grille, chrome-outlined tail lamps, and bright aluminum wheels. With nine paint colors to choose from, customers can stay with a monochromatic theme or go for two-tone look with a roof in either White Suede or Brilliant Silver.
The Ford Flex is a highly adaptable, highly personalized vehicle, offering an extensive list of available features designed to meet the needs of its drivers. These factory options include:
The 2009 Ford Flex is designed with customer comfort in mind. That’s why there are numerous features that are exclusive to its crossover class – all of them inspired by customer demand.
A refrigerator that cools.
Mounted between the second-row captain’s chairs, this class-leading feature doesn’t just keep cool beverages cold, it can cool up to seven 12-ounce cans, four half-liter bottles or two 20-ounce bottles from room temperature to 41 degrees in just more than two-and-one-half hours.
Ambient lighting.
Flex owners can tailor program seven-color ambient lighting to their mood with the flick of a switch. Customers can change the lighting on two LEDs mounted on the front console, two on the footwells and two around the cup holders.
Capless fuel filler system.
Ford Flex owners will never again forget to put the gas cap back on after fueling. The capless filler system also provides a better seal, cutting down on smog-forming emissions.
Voice activated hands-free in-car communications.
The Ford Sync™ voice-activated, in-car communications and entertainment system allows for hands-free use of mobile phones and media players by the driver. An available voice-activated navigation system offers real-time traffic and weather information, a 23,000-song personal jukebox.
Sirius Satellite Radio with Travel Link™
Flex owners and passengers get up-to-the-minute information and entertainment content through Ford SIRIUS Travel Link’s uninterrupted, coast-to-coast coverage. Drivers can avoid highway and road congestion with real-time traffic flow and accident reports, or access fuel prices from over 120,000 gas stations. The SIRIUS Travel Link system also provides detailed weather information, sports scores and schedules, as well as movie listings from over 4,500 theaters.
Ford’s exclusive second-generation door-entry keypad.
The flat-panel, backlit keypad, which is housed in the Flex’s black B pillars, eliminates the need for door-mounted buttons. By simply entering a five-digit code, customers can unlock doors, disarm the alarm system and disable the auto-lock function.
The three rows of seats in the seven-passenger 2009 Ford Flex can be configured to meet any and all traveling needs. No matter how the interior space is used, there is always plenty of legroom, ensuring that no one travels “coach-class” in the Flex.
The interior of the Flex takes its inspiration from fashion and furniture design; stylish details include tweed-like seat fabric and inserts in a hounds-tooth pattern. The Flex isn’t just good-looking; the interior is all about comfort and convenience, too.
The second and third row seats are slightly higher than the one in front, meaning that the view is terrific from every seat. Flex owners can choose to get a second-row bench, or captain’s chairs, with or without a center console. Transporting large or bulky items? No need to worry; every seat (except the driver’s seat) folds flat, and even the footrest is stowable.
Ford Flex owners enjoy the sound of silence with a powerful ride.
Drivers and passengers will love that every aspect of the 2009 Ford Flex was designed with reduced noise and vibration in mind. The independent rear suspension system allows for better tuning, the 6-millimeter thick windshield cuts wind and powertrain noise, and specially selected tires make road sounds nearly unnoticeable.
Driving is a real pleasure with the powerful and confident road manners of the 2009 Ford Flex. The 3.5-liter, DOHC, 24-valve, 60-degree V-6 engine has more than 260 horsepower and 245 lb.-feet of torque. For drivers this translates into smooth driving and easy lane changes. This powertrain, including a six-speed transmission allows the Flex towing capacity exceeding 4,000 lbs. An available intelligent AWD system can anticipate wheel slip before it happens.
New Tools Helps Ford Flex and Ford F-150 Launch in Quality
The 2009 Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and Ford F-150 are among the first Ford vehicles to fully utilize a series of virtual manufacturing tools and processes designed to catch possible build concerns by simulating automotive performance.
During the prototype builds, the program teams were able to reduce more than 80 percent of potential manufacturing concerns by running more than 10,000 advanced digital pre-assembly engineering checks on the Flex and the F-150. In addition, engineers were able to reduce design and production tooling issues by 50 percent.
Virtual manufacturing enables Ford to cut production expenditures by reducing the number of prototypes, material waste and cost of tooling. For consumers it translates into more durable vehicles with less repair costs.
As diesel fans around the world anticipate National Biodiesel Day on March 18, the birthday of the famed engine inventor, Rudolf Diesel, Ford readies for customers the new 2011 Super Duty and its all-new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine with unsurpassed biodiesel compatibility.
Ford is adding an exciting new element to its sponsorship of the hit television series “American Idol,” giving the top 12 Idols a unique opportunity to work with Ford designers and create their own personalized 2011 Ford Fiesta.
