2011 Fiesta to Launch with Bold New Colors

Henry Ford – pioneering populist and entrepreneur extraordinaire – famously quipped that customers can have their cars in “any color so long as it is black.” Well, that might’ve worked for folks during the Great Depression (wasn’t everything in black and white back then?), but customers of the Great Recession want a more cheerful hue. Who can blame them? Even the Goth girl next door needs a splash of “passion orange” in her life.

Still skeptical? Look around. Fashion magazines are heralding bright colors this fall. Bold shades are being offered in an increasing array of consumer products – from laptop computers to vacuums to stand mixers for the kitchen.

Not Your Great-Granddad’s Ford
Ford is experiencing the trend, too, with high demand for vehicle colors such as the 2010 Mustang in “Grabber Blue” and the F-150 SVT Raptor in “Molten Orange.” When the 2011 Ford Fiesta goes on sale next summer, consumers will have bright colors to choose from, including “Bright Magenta” and “Lime Squeeze.” In the U.S. already, Ford is seeing strong sales for cars in brilliant colors:
  • Nearly four in 10 (39 percent) customers purchasing the new Ford F-150 SVT Raptor are choosing “Molten Orange.”

  • New “Grabber Blue” Ford Mustangs are exceeding sales projections, accounting for roughly 10 percent of total 2010 Mustang sales so far.

The Ford Fiesta is coming to the United States with even bolder colors after seeing drivers around the globe gravitate to a palette of brilliant hues:
  • In Asia, Fiesta buyers’ third most favorite color (15 percent of sales) is an eye-popping blue called “Vision,” followed by the lime green “Squeeze” (11 percent) with the top selling color being “Moondust Silver.” In China, nearly three in 10 (28 percent) Fiestas purchased are “Passion Orange,” making it far and away the favorite choice.

  • Right behind “Panther Black” and “Silver”, Europeans are selecting “Hot Magenta” and “Vision” as their third and fourth most favorite colors, each accounting for about 10 percent of sales across Europe.

In fact, for the first time with any Ford vehicle in Europe, Fiesta buyers are saying that vehicle color was among the top 10 reasons for purchasing the car, according to Ford research.

Since May, 100 Fiesta agents have traveled more than 800,000 miles around the country, primarily driving “Hot Magenta” and “Squeeze” colored Fiestas as part of Ford’s Fiesta Movement (www.fiestamovement.com) The Euro-spec Fiestas are turning heads with their bold colors.

Quotes:

“Brilliant colors are transforming the norms in how we think about all sorts of products, allowing people to express individuality more and more through the electronics they use and the cars they drive. Color is a simple way to allow people to add a personal touch to their everyday lives – something that speaks to them and expresses a little of their personality.”
– Susan Swek, Ford Group Chief Designer, Color and Materials Design

“Almost everywhere I go, someone comments on the color (of her Lime Squeeze Ford Fiesta). Women love it, and some people even show me how it matches their cell phone. It makes me think of spring. There’s a lot of life in it. I think people are excited about having more color options these days. It allows people to express their personalities more.”
– Hilary McHone, Ford Fiesta agent and Brooklyn photographer, who had her wedding dress made this summer to match the lime green

2010 FORD MUSTANG SCORES 5-STAR SAFETY RATINGS

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

2010 FORD MUSTANG COUPE EARNED THE U.S. GOVERNMENT’S TOP 5-STAR CRASH-TEST RATING

2010 Ford Mustang Scores 5-Star Safety Ratings

The 2010 Ford Mustang coupe has earned the U.S. government’s top 5-star crash-test rating, adding to widespread acclaim for the new car’s unmistakable design and upgraded performance that builds on the formula that’s made it America’s favorite pony car for 45 years. Ford has more U.S. government 5-star-rated vehicles than any other brand and more Top Safety Pick ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other automaker.

Structurally Strong
The new Mustang uses high strength steel in its body structure and uses ultra high strength steel in the door intrusion beams for additional side impact protection.

The Mustang’s considerable body stiffness contributes to the coupe and convertible’s driving performance and has a parallel benefit in accident protection. While the coupe’s body structure is approximately 31 percent stiffer than the previous Mustang platform, the convertible’s is more than twice as stiff – creating a structure that helps protect the cabin from deformation and intrusion during an impact.

The front structure’s crush zones are computer-designed to absorb energy in a controlled manner and help dissipate it before it can reach the passenger compartment. Ford engineers have run thousands of design iterations of the Mustang’s front rails to arrive at an octagonal shape that helps spread crash forces evenly to help protect occupants.

Technologically Advanced
State-of-the-art technology adds to the convenience and safety of the 2010 Mustang, from the availability of the latest version of Ford SYNC®, with new features 911 Assist™ and Vehicle Health Report, to standard AdvanceTrac® Electronic Stability Control, which complements the all-speed traction control and standard anti-lock braking system (ABS).

Additional standard safety equipment includes Beltminder® and the Personal Safety System™ – a system that includes dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, safety belt pretensioners and Beltminder.

Sales Leader
Mustang remains the number one selling sports car by a wide margin, with the new 2010 model driving showroom traffic. In April, Mustang had nearly a 40 percent share of the retail sports car segment.

QUOTES:

“The Mustang offers top safety ratings that, like its design and performance, other sports cars cannot match.” – Sue Cischke, Ford Group Vice President of Ford Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering

“We’ve made many upgrades to the new Mustang that contributes not only to the car’s safety, but also to its driving enjoyment thanks to a stiffer structure. – Steve Kozak, Ford Chief Engineer for Safety Systems

“Interest in the fast, fun and affordable Mustang remains outstanding. The feedback from our dealers and customers is that we’ve taken the new 2010 Mustang to a new level of excellence.” – Steve Ling, Ford Car Marketing Manager

Catch a Glimpse of the 2010 Mustang: Week 9

2010 Ford Mustang

The strong powerful design of the 2010 Mustang interior was guided by a sense of harmony and movement. “It was very important for us to carefully sculpt the shapes to suggest speed and movement,” says Senior Designer Robert Gelardi, “but it was equally important to maintain harmony between all elements.”

“The instrument panel flowing into the console is a strong element of Mustang interior DNA,” said Design Manager Gary Morales. “The instrument panel and center console are designed to appear as one continuous, uninterrupted shape. The design team worked diligently with the engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure this vision for the 2010 Mustang became reality.”

“We’re proud this modern flowthrough interface was executed with class-leading craftsmanship,” added Chief Designer Douglas Gaffka. “The flowthrough design allows the soft IP to extend around the centerstack providing a softer rest for the driver’s leg.”

In addition to the beautiful appearance and world-class fit and finish, the shape of the console and the elements within have increased functionality as well. “The console is designed as one single arc with an integrated armrest, so there is no obstruction to your arm while shifting gears. The cup holders can be hidden under the flip door, and the storage bin under the armrest can be locked,” says Gaffka.

The interior harmony is exemplified by the door armrest and seats. “When designing the armrest, we repeated the dramatic arc on the console,” says Gelardi “Not only to create a harmonious cohesive design, but to optimize ergonomics and comfort.” Finally, you’ll notice special attention was paid to the door inserts, where the upholstery pattern match the seat inserts.

Soldier Deployed in Iraq Comes Home to a 2010 Mustang

Winner of Mustang Stories and a 2010 Ford Mustang

Kory Chesher of Kentucky, a soldier currently deployed in Iraq, is the Grand Prize Winner in the 2010 Mustang Stories contest. When he comes home from duty in a few weeks, he’ll receive a brand-new 2010 Mustang and an all-expenses-paid trip to the L.A. Auto Show for the unveiling of the 2010 Mustang this November.

Here’s Kory’s winning entry:

It started when I was about six years old. I was in the truck with my father and we were at a stoplight. Across the road at the other light was this "car". It drew my attention away from everything else in the world. I asked my dad what it was and he simply said, "Oh, that's a Mustang." I remember it like it was yesterday. I now know that it was a 1968 black fastback. That was almost 20 years ago. 20 years of love, addiction, obsession. 20 years of longing and desire. Now I'm a soldier in the United States Army deployed to Iraq. I spend my spare time tearing through Mustang magazines that my family and total strangers are kind hearted enough to send to me. Every opportunity I get I'm online poring through forums and pictures; studying every little tidbit of knowledge I can get my hands on; meticulously memorizing seemingly insignificant trivia. Names, dates, specs, colors, paint codes, production numbers, costs, anything, everything. A Mustang of my own wouldn't quell this life I live; it would supercharge it. The only thing greater than a life loving Mustangs is a life with a Mustang. With a Mustang to call my own I could finally experience the pride and freedom that I have only been watching from afar. It will ignite a passion like nothing I have ever experienced. Mustangs are my one true love. I am ready to go driving now.

Congratulations, Kory, and welcome home!

Everyone has a Mustang story. Thanks to Ford, through the “Mustang Stories” contest, simply telling that story offered entrants the chance to win a 2010 Mustang, the hotly anticipated next generation of the American classic. Essays describing memorable Mustang stories were submitted by thousands of Mustang fans from across the globe. Some of the best can be read at www.the2010mustang.com

2010 Mustang Design: Week 8

Catch a Glimpse of the 2010 Mustang: Week 8

2010 Ford Mustang

The 2010 Mustang team strived to ensure the driving experience of America’s muscle car icon was the best Mustang yet. A powerful new design, upgraded soft materials and world-class craftsmanship, driven by meticulous attention to detail and intently listening to customer feedback, define the next-generation Mustang.

Customer feedback led to new and improved features such as the interior trunk release button. “That’s something customers have asked for, so we worked hard to make sure it was included for the new 2010 design in a unique, modern way,” said Chief Designer Douglas Gaffka.

As with everything on the 2010 Mustang, the team executed the trunk release and traction control buttons in a way that was specially designed for the car. The graphic on each button, for example, isn’t just a generic car icon.

It’s a Mustang.

“We felt it was critical to pay attention even the smallest detail,” says Senior Designer Robert Gelardi. “The Mustang is special car, a legend, and everything should be treated as such. Whether it was ergonomics, design, world-class fit and finish or even the graphics on the buttons, everything was specifically and precisely created. We wanted our customers to feel as special driving the 2010 Mustang as we did designing it.”

2010 Mustang Design: Week 5

Catch a Glimpse of the 2010 Mustang: Week 5

2010 Ford Mustang

The attention to detail and passion of everyone involved with the 2010 Mustang to make it the best ever are evident looking across the beautiful cockpit of America’s favorite muscle car. For 2010, for example, the genuine aluminum trim panels are precisely inset to and fully encapsulated by the soft-touch instrument panel. “The world-class fit and finish of the aluminum panels and soft-touch IP will be immediately apparent,” says Mustang Chief Designer Douglas Gaffka. “The instrument panel was carefully sculpted out and the genuine aluminum panels were placed within the shape, as opposed to just layed upon it,” says Mustang Senior Designer Robert Gelardi. “This sculptural craftsmanship and inset location means the soft IP is the first touch-point.

“The new ‘dogbone' shape of the aluminum panels not only reinforces the double-brow design, a critical part of Mustang DNA, but also allows the centerstack display to be placed higher and closer to the driver.”

Incorporating a higher centerstack required a new air register design. “You'll see a definite family connection to our heritage Mustangs in the 2010 air register design,” says Mustang Design Manager Gary Morales. “The combination of circular and rectangular register shapes is well-represented in Mustang DNA,” adds Gelardi, “but the forms are definitely modern, inspired by exhaust outlets drilled into the aluminum, each capped off with a precisely located chrome ring.”

The genuine aluminum is also present on the modern, yet classic, steering wheel, which is wrapped in leather. “All three spokes are genuine aluminum,” adds Morales, “and there is a special focus on driver comfort. Both the spokes’ shapes and the audio controls have been ergonomically designed.” Even the steering-wheel badge received special attention. “This badge is genuine stamped aluminum, incorporating the new 2010 pony design,” says Gelardi. “We worked very closely with the engineering and manufacturing teams to be certain the features of the pony were sharp and detailed, right down to the mane and eyes.”

“Incorporating both brushed and polished finishes meant achieving the small details was challenging,” adds Morales. “But like everything else on the 2010 Mustang, we wouldn't rest until it was right.”
