FORD F-150 OUTPERFORMS COMPETITION IN IIHS SIDE-IMPACT CRASH TESTS

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Unique 'K-Bag Feature Helps Ford F-150 Outperform Competition in New IIHS Side-Impact Crash Tests

UNIQUE K-BAG FEATURE HELPS FORD F-150 OUTPERFORM COMPETITION IN NEW IIHS SIDE-IMPACT CRASH TESTS

When they say “Built Ford Tough” about the all-new 2009 F-150 they aren’t just talking about brawny stuff like high strength steel. They’re also talking about cushiony features such as air bags – the kind of air bags other trucks wish they had, namely a “K-Bag”.

The all-new 2009 Ford F-150 – which features exclusive “K-bag” side air bag technology – provides better side-impact crash safety ratings than the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram, according to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Special “K-bag”

Among the truck’s unmatched list of advanced standard safety features is its patented “K-bag” technology, a new front seat-mounted dual-chamber side air bag named for its unique shape, which is designed to help protect the rib cage from excessive crash forces during a side impact. This air bag is supported with a state-of-the-art side crash sensing system that uses pressure pulses from the impact to deploy the air bag 30 percent faster than a conventional system.

America’s safest full-size pickup

The F-150 earned an IIHS “Top Safety Pick” last November and quadruple 5-star government crash test ratings in January – making it the only full-size pickup to achieve both top crash-test ratings. Combined with the most standard safety features in the segment, the F-150 is America’s safest full-size pickup.

More exclusive occupant protection

Also new to the 2009 F-150 is Ford’s standard Safety Canopy® side-curtain air bag rollover protection system, which helps protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollovers and side impact crashes. The air bag is designed to stay inflated for several seconds for additional protection in rollover crashes, which often last longer than side impact crashes.

Ford’s Personal Safety System – also a standard feature – is made up of a suite of protection technologies, including dual-stage front air bags and occupant weight classification, working together to help protect occupants.

Most sophisticated electronic stability control

The F-150’s standard offering of Ford’s industry exclusive AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control™) also met a newer requirement that vehicles must offer electronic stability control to earn IIHS’s top rating. The system is the world’s most sophisticated electronic stability control, helping prevent skidding and rollovers. It goes a step beyond typical stability control systems with a gyroscopic roll sensor that determines both the vehicle’s body roll angle and roll rate.

Lighter, tougher structure

The F-150’s safety leadership also is built on the solid structure that underpins the truck’s legendary “Built Ford Tough” durability and capability. The truck has an all-new hydroformed steel front end – including use of tubular ultra high-strength, lighter weight steel that contributes to its unsurpassed fuel economy in the full-size pickup truck segment.

2009 F-150 OUTPERFOMS COMPETITION

Monday, December 1st, 2008

New Website Shows 'Built Ford Tough' 2009 F-150 Outperforms Competition in Real World Tests

2009 Ford F-150

  • An all-new Web site for the all-new 2009 Ford F-150 launches today at www.fordvehicles.com/2009F150

  • Unique demonstration videos capture the new F-150 in direct head-to-head competition with the Dodge Ram, Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota Tundra

  • The new F-150 outperforms its competitors in authentic real-world tests in four categories: durability, hauling, towing and fuel efficiency
Truck customers can see for themselves how "Built Ford Tough" pickups outperform the competition by visiting the Web site for the all-new 2009 Ford F-150, which launches today at www.fordvehicles.com/2009F150

Mike Rowe, star of the Discovery Channel television show "Dirty Jobs," and F-150 Chief Engineer Matt O'Leary host a series of demonstration videos that capture the all-new F-150 in direct, head-to-head competition with the 2009 Dodge Ram, 2009 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2008 Toyota Tundra in key test areas Ford engineers evaluate when developing trucks.

"We wanted to give people a sense of how we stack up against our competitors in real world scenarios," said O'Leary. "The results validate all the work we've been doing during the last few years to deliver an unbeatable truck in areas that matter most to customers - towing, hauling, fuel economy and durability."

After entering the site, visitors can watch the F-150 in action in four tests filmed at Ford's Michigan Proving Ground - home of the company's unrivaled truck "torture testing." By clicking on a tab at the top of the page, visitors see any of the three competing trucks going through the same test on a "compare cam."

"The taping of the videos was done very meticulously so that the two videos could play simultaneously and in complete synchronization," said O'Leary. "What makes this application noteworthy is that you can select different competitive trucks to view while the F-150 video is playing and the 'compare cam' video will change instantly without any loss of synchronization."

Rowe says seeing two trucks performing in an identically controlled environment lets consumers see and experience what "Built Ford Tough" is all about.

"When you can actually see radically different results, that's the kind of proof that makes sense to somebody who's actually going to use the truck for its intended purpose," Rowe said, citing the durability test as an example.

‘BEST OVERALL HALF-TON PICKUP’

Monday, December 1st, 2008

2009 Ford F-150 Named 'Best Overall Half-Ton Pickup in Pickuptrucks.com's Shootout

2009 Ford F-150

The new 2009 Ford F-150 bested the competition in a grueling series of tests to be named PickupTrucks.com’s Best Overall Half-Ton Pickup.

In the website’s annual truck “shootout,” measuring driving impressions, power/pulling, features and fuel economy, F-150 emerged the winner. For details, see http://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com/2008-light-duty-shoot-out.html

“All the trucks we tested proved to be best in one situation or another. But overall the F-150 proved to be the most well-rounded truck to meet the widest variety of half-ton buyers’ needs,” said Mike Levine, PickupTrucks.com editor. “It offers value and features the other trucks couldn’t compete with – like trailer-sway control, which can manage the trailer’s brakes and excellent road manners when towing.”

Levine also said his tests confirmed F-150’s class-leading performance in two areas of particular importance to customers: towing capability and fuel economy.

Also tested were the 2009 models of Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, Nissan Titan and the 2008 Toyota Tundra.

“Earning this recognition from such a discerning group of experts as PickupTrucks.com is gratifying,” said Matt O’Leary, Ford’s chief engineer for the new F-150. “Their tough tests prove F-150 is the definitive full-size pickup on the market.”

NEW FORD F-150: BEST RESIDUAL VALUE

Monday, December 1st, 2008

New Ford F-150 Adds Best Residual Value to Unsurpassed Fuel Economy and Capability

2009 Ford F-150

  • The all-new 2009 Ford F-150 has earned a Residual Value Award from Automotive Leasing Guide (ALG) for retaining the highest percentage of its original price among 2009 full-size light duty pickups at the end of a conventional three-year lease, based on ALG projections

  • The 2009 Ford F-150 also has won “Truck of Texas” from the Texas Auto Writers Association, Popular Mechanics’ Automotive Excellence Award in the Workhorse category and “Best Overall Half-Ton Pickup” in PickupTrucks.com’s annual shoot out

The country’s best-selling pickup also is projected to have the segment’s best residual value for the 2009 model year, according to Automotive Leasing Guide (ALG).

The new 2009 Ford F-150 has earned a Residual Value Award from ALG, which predicts the truck will retain the highest percentage of its original price among 2009 full-size light duty pickups at the end of a conventional three-year lease term.

“The ALG Residual Value Award further validates that we are building vehicles that customers really want and value,” said John Felice, general manager, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Marketing.

“F-150’s projected resale value is a reflection of the quality, durability, product attributes and value that were designed into the truck from the beginning,” he added. “High residual value helps lower the cost of vehicle ownership. We understand how important that is to our customers.”

ALG, a California-based consulting and data-gathering firm, says its Residual Value Awards are derived from carefully studying segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends.

The new 2009 Ford F-150 continues piling up accolades, recently winning the prestigious “Truck of Texas” distinction from the Texas Auto Writers Association, capturing the “Workhorse” category of Popular Mechanics’ Automotive Excellence Awards as well as being named PickupTrucks.com’s “Best Overall Half-Ton Pickup.”

UNSURPASSED FUEL ECONOMY, CAPABILITY

Thursday, September 18th, 2008
2009 F-150 SFE

On sale in October, the new F-150 offers fuel economy that has improved an average of 8 percent across the entire lineup as a result of a wide-range of engineering enhancements. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume 3-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. At the same time, the new F-150 delivers class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds – a combination no other competitor can match.

New SFE Package
In addition, Ford will also offer a new F-150 SFE “superior fuel economy” edition delivering up to 21 miles per gallon on the highway while still providing 7,500 pounds of towing capability – fuel economy that is unsurpassed in the full-size pickup segment.

The new SFE package will be available on F-150 SuperCrew XL and XLT 4X2 vehicles with 4.6-liter, 3-valve V-8 engines and 5.5-foot beds. It also feature a new fuel-efficient six-speed automatic transmission, a 3.15:1 rear axle and 18-inch chrome clad aluminum wheels with low rolling resistance P265/60R18 all-season tires.

The SFE package will be a no-cost option on XLT SuperCrew pickups with the chrome package and will cost $1,095 when ordered on XL SuperCrew pickups with the decor package.

Quotes:
Matt O’Leary, Ford F-150 chief engineer:
“Ford has committed to have the best or equal to the best fuel economy with every new product we introduce, and we are delivering with the new F-150. Fuel economy has moved from 10th to third place among pickup buyers’ top purchase considerations – right behind durability and value. The new F-150 delivers on all three as the industry leader.”

“Earning the trust of so many truck customers during the past 31 years has taught us a lot about what they want and value from their F-150. In the past, there was a tradeoff – more fuel economy meant less capability and vice versa. With the new F-150, we didn’t accept tradeoffs. We delivered capability and fuel economy.”

MOST AERODYNAMIC

Thursday, September 18th, 2008
2009 F-150

The new F-150 is now best-in-class for aerodynamics. The new F-150 SuperCrew 4X2 with a 5.5-foot box has the lowest coefficient of drag – 0.403 – in the segment. That’s 6 percent lower than a comparable 2008 F-150.

Key aero improvements for the new F-150 include:

  • A new chamfered shape to the rear of the cab, which incorporated the center-high-mount stop lamp. This shape helps direct aerodynamic wake over the pickup box efficiently.

  • The top of the tailgate, which angles outward to create a bold lip. This wider surface at the top of the tailgate works with the cab chamfering to direct airflow over the box efficiently.

  • The front bumper valence and spoiler design, which has been improved to better manage airflow underneath the truck without compromising off-roading.

Ford Work Solutions makes the F-150 smarter and more capable

Ford Work Solutions Interior

Ford Work Solutions is an industry-exclusive suite of innovative and affordable technologies that includes four industry-first features:

  • An in-dash computer, powered by Microsoft Windows CE with Windows Auto, provides full high-speed Internet access, via Sprint Mobile Broadband Network, and works with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones. The “Built Ford Tough’ computer, integrated into the trucks’ center stack, is equipped with a 6.5-inch, high-resolution touch screen (with stylus), two gigabytes of memory, a secure digital slot for additional memory, a USB port, and a wireless keyboard and mouse.
  • Tool Link – a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) asset tracking system created in partnership with DEWALT– helps keep a detailed inventory of the tools or equipment in the pickup box. RFID tags can be fastened to tools or other items; a number of tags are provided with the system, with additional tags available through DEWALT. When the vehicle is started, a pair of RFID antennas, mounted in corrosion- and impact-resistant housings on the inside of the pickup box, scan the box for the items on a pre-programmed inventory list. Hundreds of RFID tags can be read in a matter of seconds.

The strong, eight-foot, 10 millimeter steel cable is easily woven around toolbox handles or through and around items and locked to the truck with a cuff-style clasp. It can be installed on virtually any Ford pickup truck.

Ford Work Solutions will be available later this summer on the 2009 F-150 XL, XLT and FX4, and F-Series Super Duty XL and XLT pickups and E-Series vans. Transit Connect vans join the lineup in mid 2009. Many items will be available for dealer installation to upgrade existing trucks already in service.

F-150 WINS AUTOWEEK AWARD

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Preeminent car magazine chooses the new 2009 Ford F-150 as “most significant” vehicle of NAIAS

2009 Ford F-150

The editors of AutoWeek Magazine have picked the new 2009 Ford F-150 as the “Most Significant” vehicle of this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at their annual Design Forum held in Detroit Jan. 16.

AutoWeek reported: “From the Explorer America [concept]– a unibody-constructed, friendlier sport/utility vehicle – to the Verve, the best-looking small car Ford has built for America in generations, the F-150 is “Most Significant” for what it means not only to the company but to the American ethic. The F-150 is ‘Ford Tough’ – and so was this decision among quite an impressive lineup of products Ford has on display."

The new 2009 Ford F-150 offers the most capability, most ‘smart’ features and most choice in the full-size pickup market. The new 2009 F-150 is new from the inside and out – from its segment-first features, tough new exterior, more spacious, flexible and refined interior and unparalleled choice of cab styles and trim levels, including a new Platinum series that redefines tough truck luxury. The addition of Platinum brings Ford to a total of 35 unique F-150 configurations.

The new 2009 Ford F-150 expands its capability by adding more usable interior space to the SuperCrew model, a stronger, lighter frame and more standard safety features than previous models.

The F-Series, America's best-selling truck line for 31 years, turns 60 this year, during which time Ford has built more than 33 million F-Series pickups. Today, Ford has more F-Series pickups on the road with 250,000 miles on them than anyone else in the truck business.
