What Women Want

What Women Want

The old-time Ford advertisements from the turn of the 20th century tell a quaint story: They show the woman of that time as a fragile creature, somewhat prone to panic, in need of a simplistic automobile that even she can operate.

Times have most definitely changed. Ford vehicles are still durable and easy to handle, but the women behind the wheel bear little resemblance to the hothouse flower of yesteryear. She’s strong, self-assured, and very capable of taking care of herself. As the National Women’s History Project sponsors its 30th Women’s History Month in March, Ford Motor Company is more aware than ever of the changing role that women hold in today’s society.

“Women pack a powerful purchasing punch,” said Christine Stasiw Lazarchuk, director of global marketing research for Ford. “And that’s grabbed the attention of all automakers searching for new business in an era of tight competition. Companies that fail to realize that will be left behind, especially now, when the margin between success and failure is narrow, and we’re fighting for every advantage and sale.”

Statistics prove out her point. “Women are directly responsible for 45 to 50 percent of all new vehicles purchased in the U.S, and they have a direct influence of up to 80 percent of vehicles they don’t purchase themselves,” Stasiw Lazarchuk said. “And 65 percent take their own vehicles to the dealership or shop for repair. Women account for a whopping $85 billion in automotive and related businesses.”

Those numbers, from 2007, are only expected to grow stronger.

  • Women leading the way
But it’s not only the U.S. that is seeing women’s roles shift. “The whole world is changing, and it’s changing fast,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford’s global trend manager. “Women are at the forefront of change that’s contributing significantly to an increase in their progress and power.”
Connelly sees five major global factors driving that change:

  • Improved education:  Although gender disparities persist in some countries, the gender gap in education continues to narrow, allowing women to find their way into the work force. In the U.S., the number of women earning Ph.D.s is rising at a rate of 63 percent a year.

  • Career opportunities:  With more education, women are finding their way into the work force, earning their own money. In China, for instance, 44 percent of government jobs are held by women.

  • Financial independence:  Increased earning power is leading to financial independence for more women. Working women in relationships often out-earn their partners – by 25 percent in the U.S., 30 percent in Great Britain.

  • Delayed marriage and parenthood:  More and more women are choosing to delay marriage to pursue education, career and personal development, with many choosing to have fewer children later in life. In Bangladesh, for instance, marriage is delayed due to incentives for girls to attend primary and secondary school, and in Brazil, the declining fertility rate has been attributed to women modeling their lives on the small, happy families they see on television.

  • Media: The spread of information in the media, particularly the Internet, has empowered women. About half of women worldwide own and use personal computers.

Changing roles as consumers

As the world changes, women obviously change with it, Connelly notes. When the economy began to crumble, many women took a lead role in keeping the home front together – either going back to work or taking over the belt-tightening of the budget. “Gender roles have blurred,” Connelly said. “You no longer have the women always staying at home and the man of the house always the breadwinner. You don’t have those definitive roles anymore.”

That could make things difficult for Ford’s marketing team, charged with reaching target demographics that include, of course, the specific needs and wants of women. Unless you remember a few things, said Chantel Lenard, group marketing manager for global and midsize cars.

“Ford doesn’t design cars for the sexes,” she said. “We don’t design ‘male’ cars and ‘female’ cars. We design well-made, well-designed cars with features that appeal to both men and women.”

Ford researchers queried women with 2008 vehicles and found that these are the highest-ranked features they don’t have on their vehicles, but they’d like to:

  • Run-flat tires (57 percent)

  • Rain-sensing wipers (44 percent)

  • Auto park assist (32 percent)

  • Tire pressure monitoring system (18 percent)

Notice on the list, said Lenard, that these are features women like, but men wouldn’t object to. In fact, she said, oftentimes, men and women want the same things. They just use different language.

“We hear the same thing over and over again – both men and women want reliability, fuel economy, driving dynamics and safety. But the way that they express that is completely different,” Lenard said. “For instance, a woman might say, ‘I don’t want to break down somewhere and be stranded,’ and a man might say, ‘I don’t want to have to spend time getting my car fixed.’”

The differences continue, she notes. “Men and women both appreciate horsepower and responsive handling, but the woman may say it's because they can help her get out of a dangerous situation quickly and easily, and the man might appreciate it because of the way the car can handle the corners. It’s just a different way of looking at the same situation. They both want the same features on the vehicle. They express it differently.”

That said, Lenard does believe there are some differences in the sexes. Females tend to notice details like warmer interior colors or hand-stitching. And they’re willing to pay for little extras that they feel are worth it, like heated steering wheels or specialized interior packages.

A growing influence

Women’s roles in society will continue to shift and change, said Connelly; that much is obvious. And as Ford grows as a company, it, too, will continue to monitor how this important demographic views not only vehicles, but the world in general.

“There is great growth potential for companies that understand what women want,” she said. “Every day, the world is changing and women play a key role in the shifts that are occurring. At Ford, we know that women represent a huge market opportunity, and we work to design, develop and market our products and services in a way that captures the attention of this incredibly influential buying group.”

Don’t Waste Money on Outdated Advice

Don’t Waste Money on Outdated Advice

They’ve been around awhile – a snippet of advice here, an old adage there. They’re the guidelines that are supposed to help keep cars running in top condition. Problem is, most of them aren’t based in fact – or they’re just plain outdated.

Ford decided to debunk a few of the most popular maintenance myths, including the following:

  • MYTH: Cars need oil changes every three months or 3,000 miles.False: That used to be true, but not with newer cars. Because of synthetic oils that don’t break down as quickly, consumers actually don’t need oil changes as often – more like every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. (There may be two recommendations for oil-change intervals: one for normal driving and one for hard use. Check your maintenance guide to be sure.)

    SAVE
: Either way, there’s a considerable savings here: Let’s say you’re an average consumer who drives 12,000 miles a year, which means you would need about four oil changes a year under the old formula. With the new extended mileage, consumers need only about two oil changes a year, cutting their bill for oil changes in half – you could pocket upward of $50 a year or $650 in the lifetime of your car and do something to help the environment by saving oil.

  • MYTH: You need to let your vehicle engine warm up in cold weather.False: Your vehicle’s engine only needs a warm-up period of about 10 seconds – you’re actually the only one who may feel chilly. The engine warms up while you drive. Running your car any longer beforehand is just a waste of gas.

    SAVE
: Depending on engine size, temperature and other variables, modern cars can use about a third of a gallon of gas per hour while idling. By giving up that 10-minute idle every weekday morning, you could save more than a gallon a month – $32 a year or $416 over the life of the vehicle.

  • MYTH: Premium gas is a treat for your car.False: Unless your vehicle is specifically tailored to take advantage of the higher octane level in the fuel, you’re wasting your money. Go by what is recommended in your owner’s manual and leave it at that.

    SAVE
: At current gas prices, drivers may save up to $150 a year by opting for unleaded gas instead of premium.

  • MYTH: The number listed on the sidewall of your tire is the recommended tire pressure. False: In most cases, this is actually the maximum pressure allowed for that tire. The recommended amount of pressure is usually listed on the inside door panel – check your owner’s manual to be sure.

    SAVE
: The government estimates that the average driver’s tires are underinflated by 26 percent. Generally, underinflated treads lower gas mileage about a half percent for each pound lacking when the pressure of all four tires is added up. An average driver with underinflated tires could add $79 a year to his or her fuel bill – or more than $1,027 in the lifetime of the vehicle. You could also save nearly half a barrel of crude oil per year by keeping your tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended level. Per the EPA, one barrel of crude oil equals 42 gallons of gasoline.

  • MYTH: Buy gas in the morning and you’ll save money.False: The old adage was to fill up in the morning when gas was coolest and most dense because gas is sold by volume and you would get more gas for your buck. But gas is sold in underground, nonmetallic tanks that typically hold about 10,000 gallons, and it will take a lot of sunlight to raise the temperature even a degree. (However, pumping your gas when it’s cooler does mean less release of vapors, which is better for the environment.)

    SAVE
: Do your research before buying. Ford’s SIRIUS Travel Link™ sorts gas stations by price on the navigation screen, but Web sites like MSNAutos.com can also help drivers navigate to bargains. In our quick research, we found two gas stations in New York City – less than a mile apart – with 30 cents per gallon price difference. If you know before you go and fill up for less every time, it could result in $227 in your pocket annually, or $2,951 saved over the lifetime of your car.

All totaled, by implementing small changes, drivers could save up to $538 a year or $6,610 in the lifetime of their vehicle. In today’s economy, every penny counts. That’s why it’s important to get the facts.

Nothing Says ‘Success’ Like a Five-Star Rating

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
Nothing Says ‘Success’ Like a Five-Star Rating

It’s commonly said that you should “protect your investment.” That’s all well and good, but an investment that is really working in your favor is one that protects you.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT recently earned top ratings for frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The three-row luxury crossover previously earned a 2009 "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford Motor Company has more Top Safety Pick ratings and more U.S. government five-star ratings than any other automaker.

A winning combination

The all-new MKT is attracting a balanced mix of Lincoln loyalists and new customers with its array of standard and optional crash-protection, crash-avoidance and driver-awareness features in addition to distinctive design, interior spaciousness, craftsmanship and fuel economy.

Since the MKT went on sale last fall, approximately 45 percent of MKT purchasers have traded in competitive models, most commonly the Acura MDX and Cadillac SRX. More than half of those buyers opted for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ engine.

Customer interest in MKT's driver-awareness features has been strong as well. Nearly one in three purchasers of the MKT opts for Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support and three of four opt for a package that includes Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert.

Technology under the skin

The Lincoln MKT features Ford's Trinity Front Crash Body Architecture. The energy-absorbing body structure is optimized for strength and stiffness and features octagonal front frame rails, engine cradle/front subframe and "shotgun" front structural members designed to absorb and redirect crash forces away from the passenger compartment.

Lincoln MKT also includes Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement Architecture (SPACE®) to optimize side-impact occupant protection. The SPACE system integrates a hydroformed high-strength steel tube in the floor that runs the width of the vehicle from B-pillar to B-pillar and reinforcements along the rocker panels to help protect passengers in side-impact incidents.

Lincoln MKT also features Ford's Personal Safety System™, combining multiple technologies to tailor the air bag package and safety belt functions to the individual passenger and the accident circumstances. The system can identify variables, such as severity of the crash, weight of the individual passenger and safety belt usage, to adjust air bag deployment force.

Your Family Will Thank You

Thinking about replacing that crusty old mini-van, and want a new ride that your spouse and kids won’t groan about getting into? According to Kelley Blue Book’s editors there are 10 family haulers that deserve your consideration, and here are three of their favorites: the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2010 Ford Taurus and 2010 Ford Flex.

“While the product landscape in the new-car world seems ever-changing, the vehicle needs of the typical American family remain fairly constant; capable versatility, value, safety and economical factors usually remain top-of-mind,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.

“Best hybrid experience on the road”

2010 Ford Fusion
Nerad says the Ford Fusion Hybrid is a top pick for families because it saves money at the pump, keeps everyone entertained with the latest Ford SYNC® technology, and scores high in terms of ride and handling.

“The Ford Fusion Hybrid doesn’t scream its hybrid-ness to the multitudes,” he said. “Instead, it provides what many of us at Kelley Blue Book feel is the best hybrid experience on the road. We love the way the Fusion Hybrid rides and handles, and we applaud its innovative dash and environmental credentials.”

“A visually striking technological tour de force”

Your Family Will Thank You

Nerad says customers in the market for a family car should also consider the Ford Taurus because it delivers features that American families will appreciate.

“What was once merely a competent full-size sedan has transformed into a visually striking technological tour de force,” he said. “With features uncommon in its segment, a roomy cabin, cavernous trunk, and nimbleness that belies its size, the redesigned Ford Taurus is a family car that pleases everyone, including the driver.”

“A great transcontinental family tourer”

2010 Ford Flex
Nerad says if the editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com had to pick an overall winner from the “Top 10 Family Cars for 2010,” the Ford Flex might get the nod.

“The Ford Flex leaves plain-vanilla crossovers behind with its distinctive styling, and it has all the comfort and convenience features required to be a great transcontinental family tourer while performing equally well in getting the kids to softball practice,” he said. “It drives better than some midsize sedans, offers comfortable seating for seven, and boasts a long list of available interior amenities including an array of infotainment features and even a small refrigerator.”

What’s Stylish Now?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
2010 Ford Flex

GQ magazine knows a thing or two about stylishness and it isn’t limited to bespoke suits and luxurious accoutrements. The magazine’s Web site recently listed its “most stylish cars of the past 50 years.”

Among the honored are a number of exotic sports cars and high-end European coupes, but you’ll also find the classic Ford Mustang GT (’66-’68) and the contemporary Ford Flex (’09-’present).

Here’s what GQ says about Ford’s distinctively designed full-size crossover: “Instead of the faux-sporty, swoopy lines that so many cars this size have adopted as if to say "I'm not a minivan!," the Flex is unabashedly boxy, its most outstanding feature being the four horizontal grooves on the doors. Like the Ford Woody that those lines evoke, the Flex is comfortable being what it is—the most stylishly square people-mover on the road today.”

GQ isn’t alone in thinking the Flex is “the best-looking car of its day… one whose beauty stands the test of time” (GQ’s criteria for stylishness). The Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC) singled out the Flex as its 2009 “Collectible Vehicle of the Future” award-winner last December.

It’s Not Just a Technology – It’s an Experience

2011 Edge - MyFord Touch

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for… cars and consumer electronics have never been as beautifully aligned as they are now.

MyFord Touch driver connect technology, launching on the 2011 Ford Edge, is designed to be powerful yet intuitive for drivers, blending strengths of the most proven interfaces in consumer electronics – including MP3 players and mobile phones – with a new generation of Ford’s award-winning SYNC system.

MyFord redesigns the in-car interface, mirroring how consumers interact with most devices in their lives using touch-sensitive buttons, touch screens, thumb-wheel controls and voice recognition.

In that respect, MyFord is instantly familiar. Using reconfigurable displays and simplified voice commands, though, MyFord also can present multiple layers of information, just as the driver wants it.

MyFord Touch layout

MyFord Touch retains the traditional car interior layout that has existed for decades – instrument cluster in front of the driver, center stack dividing the dashboard – and adds even more voice control plus full-color LCD screens for much of the visual information presentation. The information presented is customizable by the driver using a combination of voice controls, touch-screen technology and five-way cell phone-style buttons mounted on the steering wheel.

MyFord Touch displays information using two 4.2-inch full-color LCD screens flanking an analog speedometer and an 8-inch touch-screen LCD at the top of the center stack. A five-way switch on each side of the steering wheel crossbar – similar to the one found on most mobile phones and MP3 players – controls the information displayed on the corresponding instrument panel screens.

Regardless of what menus customers are viewing, a single touch on the appropriate corner will always bring up the desired functionality, and in most cases, a voice command also can be used to adjust the controls.

With the four-corner layout, functions are where they’re expected to be, and they’re always visible on the screen, so it’s clear and easy for users to understand where they are in the system.

Color also is used to give drivers intuitive visual cues between the central 8-inch MyFord Touch display and the instrument panel-mounted 4.2-inch display. Phone and communications functions always are presented with an orange background, navigation with a green background, climate control with a blue background and audio/entertainment functions with a red background.

SYNC – behind the scenes
Behind the displays of MyFord Touch driver connect technology, the next generation of Ford’s award-winning SYNC system runs the show, built using the Microsoft Windows Embedded Auto software platform.

SYNC has evolved from a stand-alone module providing voice-activated control for mobile devices to a fully integrated platform for Ford vehicles with MyFord – a technology that will become the global interior architecture for all future Ford products.

Flexible and upgradable

Built using the latest technology from the Windows Embedded Business at Microsoft, the second generation of SYNC has been designed from the outset to be expandable, allowing it to grow and add new features without requiring new hardware. By employing a Media Hub for interfacing with external devices and media, Ford has helped ensure compatibility with future innovations.

Quotes
“MyFord Touch, combined with new SYNC functionality, creates an experience that will cause people to fall in love with their vehicles again. It’s not just a technology; it’s an experience – one we hope will have people across the globe looking forward to spending time behind the wheel of their vehicle.”
– Derrick Kuzak, Ford Group Vice President, Global Product Development

“MyFord really is about managing information. Driving is the priority when you’re behind the wheel, so we’ve made it possible to simplify the content management so customers can drive with minimal distraction. In the end, what MyFord displays is really up to the driver.”
– Jason Johnson, Ford User Interface Design Engineer

“The steering wheel has all the necessary functions available in a very compact area, right where your hand falls as you grab the wheel. The five-way buttons will feel familiar to anyone who has used a mobile phone or MP3 player. Drivers aren’t forced to use a quirky or unfamiliar interface like a joystick or rotary knob.”
– Jason Johnson, Ford User Interface Design Engineer

“With more than 1 million SYNC-equipped cars on the road already, it’s exciting to see Ford continue to push the envelope and explore new applications for Microsoft’s Windows Embedded automotive software. The car is returning to the place where consumers go to see high-tech innovation.”
– Kevin Dallas, General Manager for Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Business Division

“The Media Hub is really the key to SYNC’s new upgradability. Take navigation: In the past, map data were stored on a hard drive and updates took hours to load from DVD. With SYNC and MyFord Touch, if you need a map update, you take the old SD card out of the Media Hub and pop in a new one. It’ll be the first time an automaker will offer something that competes with the cost and ease of personal navigation devices.”
– Jason Johnson, Ford User Interface Design Engineer

More Power to Ya

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
2011 Ford Edge Sport 3.7-liter V-6

Remember when vehicles came with only one powertrain option? Ah, those were simpler times. But there’s something to be said about having options, too. After all, variety is the spice of life.

The 2011 Ford Edge, which launches this summer, showcases Ford’s impressive drive to bring new powertrain options to the customer. Both the Edge 3.5-liter V-6 and Edge Sport 3.7-liter V-6 use advanced engine valvetrain technology (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing, or Ti-VCT) and clever control strategies to increase horsepower and torque to best-in-class levels. This beats competitors such as the BMW X5, Lexus RX350 and Audi Q5, all while delivering unsurpassed fuel economy of 27 mpg (3.5-liter V-6 highway).

The 3.5-liter V-6 produces 285 horsepower and 253 ft.-lb. of torque while the 3.7-liter V-6 delivers 305 horsepower and 280 ft.-lb. of torque – all on regular fuel. Edge’s unsurpassed fuel economy is not at the expense of power and performance. For example, the 3.5-liter V-6 with Ti-VCT technology delivers highway fuel economy that is 15 percent better than the Nissan Murano but produces 20 horsepower more.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The SelectShift Automatic™ transmission is standard on the 2011 Edge SEL and Limited series, with class-exclusive paddle activation of the SelectShift standard on the 2011 Edge Sport.

In addition, the arrival of the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine in the months ahead will give customers yet more choice and will deliver class-leading fuel economy with impressive power and torque. All of this will be mated to a six-speed transmission that will help channel the impressive performance from the new EcoBoost engine. Since the launch of Edge in 2006, fuel economy performance has been drastically improved. With the introduction of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4, fuel economy on the 2011 Edge will be 30 percent better than it was in 2006.

Edge Sport adds more power, distinctive look

The 2011 Edge Sport is powered by a 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine that produces 305 horsepower and is similar to the one added to the 2011 Ford Mustang. The 2011 Edge Sport includes all of the content found on Edge SEL as well as a specially tuned suspension, paddle shift transmission and its own unique style.

The Edge Sport’s class-exclusive 22-inch polished aluminum wheels have distinctive Tuxedo Black spoke accents. Other unique styling cues include a Tuxedo Black grille, smoked headlamp and taillamp treatment, body-color rocker moldings, oval chrome exhaust tips, body-color door cladding and revised body-color lower front and rear fascias.

Key interior differentiators are liquid silver smoke appliqués that are echoed in the silver smoke metallic leather seat inserts, aluminum pedals and class-exclusive paddle shifters, which activate the six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission to give customers the option of a fun-to-shift manual experience.

In SelectShift mode, the transmission doesn’t second-guess the driver, offering total control over gear selection and performance feel. Upshifts, for instance, are not commanded at redline, and downshifts are allowed at the lowest gear possible as defined by the engine speed.

When the system is in manual mode, engine speed matching provides faster and smoother downshifts, and customers get the gear they request within the limits of the rev limiter.

When a lower gear is selected while descending a long downhill grade, the 2011 Ford Edge Sport in SelectShift mode will hold that gear until the driver manually upshifts or returns to the fully automatic setting. To ensure safe shifting, the transmission will downshift to the lowest acceptable gear, based on a calculated maximum speed. That means if a vehicle were traveling at highway speeds, the driver could not downshift to first gear in SelectShift mode.

Quotes
“Customers told us how much they like Edge’s design and dynamic driving quality. We listened and made sure the new 2011 Edge delivers that and more – including fuel economy leadership, unexpected levels of quietness, a strong new design with quality materials, and MyFord Touch driver connect technology that will change how people experience their vehicles.”
– Mark Fields, Ford’s President of The Americas

“The new Edge demonstrates how a refresh at Ford has become more than just a few design and interior tweaks. We have taken every element of the Edge and completely reworked it, including three new powertrains, two new transmissions, a bold new exterior design and a completely new interior. If you add in our industry-exclusive MyFord Touch system, you have a vehicle that will continue to stand out above all the competition on the road.”
– Elaine Bannon, Ford Edge Chief Engineer

“The 2011 Ford Edge Sport, with its exceptional powertrain, specially tuned suspension and unique style, offers a driving experience not seen in other crossovers, and really appeals to the driving enthusiast. Like the rest of the 2011 Ford Edge lineup, it perfectly blends technology and style.”
– Elaine Bannon, Ford Edge Chief Engineer

Who Has the Edge on Style and Technology?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
2011 Ford Edge - Style and Technology

Look around. Unless you’re living in a cave you’ve probably noticed how more and more consumer products offer both high style and high technology. More than ever, great design truly is within reach.

Consider the Ford Edge. When customers made it the No. 1-selling vehicle in the midsize crossover segment in its first full year on the market it was, in part, because of the Edge’s great style and technology. Launching this summer, the 2011 Ford Edge stands to redefine the segment with a wide-ranging scope of improvements.

Bold, flowing design makes Edge the can’t-miss crossover

The bolder, more seamlessly flowing exterior design freshening is mirrored by a complementary interior, characterized by increased craftsmanship, improved materials and overall better execution. Improved fit-and-finish, softer touchpoints, and flexibility in terms of stowage in the cabin and throughout mark the 2011 Ford Edge.

Increased presence is announced through a bolder grille and a chin spoiler that appears more crafted. The A-pillar flows into the hood, which adds subtle undulations to create a heightened sculptural quality. The wrapping lines emphasize both the front end and the new wheel lineup.

MyFord Touch ushers in new era of interaction

The industry-first MyFord Touch driver connect technology provides a smarter, safer, simpler way to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their digital lives. It replaces traditional vehicle buttons, knobs and gauges with clear, crisp LCD screens and five-way controls like those found on cell phones and MP3 players.

Standard on the 2011 Edge Limited and 2011 Edge Sport, the MyFord Touch system displays information using two 4.2-inch full-color LCD screens flanking an analog speedometer and an
8-inch touch-screen LCD at the top of the center stack. A five-way switch on each side of the steering wheel crossbar controls the information displayed on the corresponding instrument panel screens. The screens can be personalized to display information relevant to each individual driver using a simple button click, voice command or touch-screen tap.

The steering wheel has all the necessary functions available in a very compact area, right where the driver’s hand falls as he or she grabs the wheel. The five-way buttons feel familiar to anyone who has used a mobile phone or MP3 player.

Like the song? You can tag it

Also new on the 2011 Ford Edge is the world’s first use of iTunes® Tagging in an available factory-installed HD Radio™ receiver. iTunes Tagging provides customers with the ability to “capture” a song they hear on the HD Radio receiver for later purchase from iTunes. With a simple push of a “TAG” button on the MyFord touch-screen display, the song information will be stored in the radio’s memory.

Once a song is tagged and customers dock their iPod to the SYNC system, the tagged song information will transfer to that iPod. Up to 100 tags on SYNC can be stored until the iPod is connected. When the iPod is then synced to iTunes, a playlist of tagged songs will appear. Customers then can preview, and if they desire, purchase and download tagged songs from the iTunes Store.

One significant benefit of HD Radio technology is that the sound quality of the broadcast is dramatically better because of the digital transmission – FM sounds like a CD and AM sounds like today’s FM broadcasts. Unlike analog broadcasts, digital broadcasts aren’t susceptible to interference, fadeout and other issues.

Brimming with standard and class-exclusive technologies

There are 12 class-exclusive standard and available features and technologies for the 2011 Ford Edge, including MyFord Touch, SYNC; Easy Fuel® (standard); SecuriCode keyless entry keypad; Blind Spot Mirrors (standard); MyKey™ (standard); AdvanceTrac® with RSC (Roll Stability Control™, standard); Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support; Cross Traffic Alert; and 22-inch wheels and paddle activation on the 2011 Edge Sport.

If you add in our industry-exclusive MyFord Touch system, you have a vehicle that will continue to stand out above all the competition on the road.”
– Elaine Bannon, Ford Edge Chief Engineer

“To me, craftsmanship isn’t just fit-and-finish. It’s also the layout and the ergonomic experience. It’s where we put the material – the stitching, the cutlines – and all the attention to detail to give the customer a great experience.”
– Elaine Bannon, Ford Edge Chief Engineer

“You can jump in the 2011 Ford Edge and bring your technology – your lifestyle – with you and have everything at your fingertips. The 2011 Ford Edge gives you all the capability and flexibility you want along with great style.”

Sometimes the Choices are So Good You Can’t Pick Just One

Thursday, December 24th, 2009
flex award_wm

fusion hybrid award_wm

The 2010 Ford Flex and the award-winning 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid have been named 2010 All-Stars by AUTOMOBILE Magazine, one of America's leading automotive lifestyle publications.

The AUTOMOBILE Magazine All-Stars are chosen by the AUTOMOBILE Magazine staff, its worldwide bureau chiefs and its contributors, following an intensive test drive of the year's most innovative and important new cars. Winners are selected based on design, value and performance, driving enjoyment and the vehicle's ability to redefine an existing category or create a new market segment.

The 2010 Ford Flex: Turning heads today and tomorrow
This year marks the second consecutive win for the Ford Flex. Last year, AUTOMOBILE Magazine described the 2009 model as a "class act among people movers."

In addition to being named one of AUTOMOBILE Magazine's 2010 All-Stars, the 2010 Ford Flex was recently singled out for the 2009 "Collectible Vehicle of the Future" award from the Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC). Members of the organization, which supports the world-famous automotive collection at the Detroit Public Library, predict Flex will be the vehicle most likely to turn heads at the Woodward Dream Cruise of 2034. Ford's unique crossover has been turning heads since its introduction in 2007.

For 2010, the Flex offers outstanding fuel economy in the full-size crossover segment with 17 mpg city/24 highway and an unsurpassed 20 mpg combined. It also offers a twin-turbocharged, direct-injected 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, an auto-fold 60/40 second-row split bench seat, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel and the Ford-exclusive MyKey™ technology, which allows owners to program a maximum top speed – and radio volume – to encourage safe operation by teen drivers.

Banner year for 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid
2009 has been a banner year for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. In addition to being named one of AUTOMOBILE Magazine's 2010 All-Stars, America's most fuel-efficient midsize sedan was honored as one of CAR and DRIVER magazine's "10Best" cars for 2010, and the entire Fusion lineup captured the prestigious MOTOR TREND Car of the Year award. The Fusion Hybrid also is a finalist for North American Car of the Year.

Despite the slump in overall industry sales, Fusion sales are at an all-time high for 2009, with the Fusion Hybrid accounting for almost 20 percent of total Fusion retail sales. And more than 60 percent of Fusion sales have been to customers coming from import brands – mostly Toyota and Honda.

Additional awards and accolades for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid include:

  • "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

  • 2009 Ward's Interior of the Year Special Achievement Award for Best Graphic Display for SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide digital instrument cluster

  • Great Car for the Long-haul Salesman by Kelley Blue Book kbb.com

  • Named one of America's Top 40 New Cars by MOTOR TREND magazine

  • Rated the No. 1 Hybrid Family Sedan by CAR and DRIVER in a recent comparison test by the magazine

  • Named 2009 Editors Choice for Fuel Sipper by CAR and DRIVER

  • Named Best Hybrid for the Money in the Midsize Car segment by cars.com

  • Named one of 2009 Top 10 Green Cars by Kelley Blue Book kbb.com

  • Earned The Detroit News Readers' Choice Award for "Best Value"

Quotes
"The level of excellence found during our annual All-Stars competition was at an all-time high and the competition was strong, despite the auto industry coming off its worst year in recent history. We whittled down a list of 39 finalists to the 10 All-Stars, and the end results produced a list of true standouts."
– Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine

"For 2010, Ford has equipped the Flex with its much-anticipated EcoBoost™ engine, thereby addressing the Flex's only weakness – power – and effectively transforming it from a well-rounded family hauler into a large sport wagon. The Flex is unique in a market brimming with compromised, look-alike utility vehicles and is one of the best-handling full-size crossovers on the market."
– Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine

"Its very ordinariness is what makes the Fusion Hybrid an AUTOMOBILE Magazine All-Star. The Fusion Hybrid is not a performance machine, but neither does it feel hobbled or inadequate for daily driving. Perhaps the best thing about it is that, apart from the LCD color screens, you might never know you're driving a hybrid."
– Jean Jennings, President and Editor-in-chief of AUTOMOBILE Magazine

Guess What 2009 Automobile will be Collectible in the Future?

Friday, December 11th, 2009
The Most Desired Flex

The Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC) have predicted that, among America’s new cars and trucks launched in 2009, the Ford Flex will become the most desired by future car collectors.

Members of the organization, which supports the world-famous automotive collection at the Detroit Public Library, vote annually to predict the “Collectible Vehicle of the Future” from the year’s new American-built cars and trucks. The Ford Flex was selected from eight all-new vehicles launched in 2009.

The award was presented to Ford executives by the Friends of the NAHC at their annual holiday reception on Thursday, Dec. 10 at NAHC quarters in the Skillman Branch Library in downtown Detroit.

The NAHC is the world’s largest public archive of automotive lore and a treasure for automotive historians, journalists and collectors. Its collection of books, manuals, photos, company histories and historic documents is open to the public.

Among recent previous winners were the 2005 Ford Mustang and 2002 Ford Thunderbird.

Quotes
“This selection is unique among all the ‘Vehicle of the Year’ awards, because it is selected by car buffs who know what future collectors will value. We asked our members to predict which of this year’s new vehicles will turn heads in the Woodward Cruise of 2034.”
– Charles K. Hyde, Chairman of the NAHC Board of Trustees

“We are delighted that the Ford Flex has been recognized by the NAHC as having a design that will become a collectible of the future. We knew from the start that we had a vehicle with stand-out design that looks like nothing else on the road, but that also meets the needs of our customers looking for passenger space with innovative technology and great fuel economy,” she said. “Reaction from our customers has been fantastic and we hope they will enjoy their cars long into the future.”
– Kate Pearce, Flex Marketing Manager

About the Active Lifestyle Vehicle awards
The awards program, now in its sixth year, recognizes new cars and trucks that best meet the needs of active buyers. The program is sponsored by AAA and the Active Network.

Twenty manufacturers participated in the 2010 competition, entering vehicles in seven categories. A panel of 12 automotive journalists drove the initial field of entries and pared the group down to 28 finalists.

Athletes on hand included members of Team Aquaphor, Active Network Media and the San Diego Triathlon Club, participating in sports that ranged from surfing and sprint triathlons to ultra-distance running. The athletes’ votes weighed 50 percent in the final tally, with jury panel votes comprising the remaining 50 percent.

Quotes
“The MKT and Fusion Hybrid were both vying in extremely competitive categories, and that speaks to the versatility and quality of the product, that it beat out all the competitive entries. The designers dealt with ergonomic challenges in the case of both vehicles. The standard safety available also was impressive because that’s tremendously important to people with active lifestyles.”
– Nina Russin, Active Lifestyle Vehicle Jury Coordinator

“Many Fusion customers have a very active lifestyle, often including outdoor athletic activities. They want a vehicle that supports their ‘On the go’ spirit and the Fusion delivers.”
– Chantel Lenard, Group Marketing Manager, Global Small and Midsize Cars

– Kate Pearce, Lincoln MKT Marketing Manager

Now, That’s What We Call a Hat Trick!

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009
Ford Flex

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Flex and Shelby GT500® – everybody wants these vehicles, including the editors of Edmunds Inside Line. For the 2010 Inside Line Editors Most Wanted Awards, F-150 SVT Raptor and Flex with EcoBoost™ snagged honors for Overall Excellence, and Shelby GT500 was named this year’s Instant Classic.

The awards are chosen, quite simply, as the name states – they’re the vehicles the editors of the magazine want the most. The only stipulation is that they must have been tested by the magazine before Nov. 1. Then the editors gather together to vote on which vehicles they would be willing to spend their own money on.

About the winners
The 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor was designed as a purpose-built, high-speed off-road truck ready for adventure, and it’s also versatile enough to handle the daily commute. Key enablers to Raptor’s exceptional performance are functional design cues and impressive suspension technology. Internal triple bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – the first on a production truck – provide position-sensitive damping and extra suspension travel for extreme high-speed off-roading and a smooth ride on the road.

Ford F150 Raptor

Ford Flex turns heads with its distinctive design and its available twin-turbocharged direct-injected 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. This all-new engine gives Flex the power and performance feel of a V-8 with the fuel economy of a standard V-6. It’s not just the room for seven and myriad interior storage options that have Flex owners raving. Flex is also packed with available innovative, class-leading technology solutions.

Ford Mustang

The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 delivers the most power and refinement ever for a Ford SVT-tuned performance Mustang – and a few surprises, too. The more powerful 2010 Shelby GT500 has horsepower increased to 540 and torque increased to 510 ft.-lb., as well as downforce increased and drag reduced. New gearbox enhancements plus a standard 3.55:1 rear axle ratio mean the 2010 Shelby GT500 will deliver improved acceleration performance while providing better highway fuel efficiency – up to 2 mpg compared to the 2009 model.

Quotes
“Instead of awarding five sports cars every year, we award a mix of vehicles that people need every day. We feel that the Flex with EcoBoost and F-150 SVT Raptor are affordable vehicles that anyone would be proud to drive – they stand out amongst their peers for 2010. The Shelby GT500 is a vehicle with a certain timelessness to engineering and design that people will appreciate for decades to come. We think it’s the car we’ll be shopping for on eBay for years and years.”
– Scott Oldham, Editor-in-chief of Edmunds Inside Line
“We’re honored that three of our vehicles were chosen. These three vehicles are shining examples of our exciting lineup, and we’re always gratified when the media take notice.”
– Ken Czubay, Ford Vice President, Marketing

ECOBOOST ADDS MORE VERSATILITY TO FLEX

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

2010 Ford Flex with available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 delivers up to 20 percent better fuel economy.

Ecoboost Adds More Versatility to Flex

The first gasoline direct-injection twin-turbocharged engine produced in North America, the 2010 EcoBoost Flex boasts segment-leading fuel economy among full-size performance crossover vehicles with 22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. In fact, the all-new engine gives Flex V-8 power and performance feel with the fuel economy of a V-6, saving customers money. Due to Ford’s significant technological advancements, customers can benefit from fuel efficiency with the seamless power delivery they expect from Flex.

Here are some key facts about Ford Flex and EcoBoost

  • The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine delivers an impressive 355 horsepower and a responsive 350 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad rpm range, simultaneously giving Ford Flex the power of a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 while enjoying V-6 fuel efficiency.

  • The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine requires all-wheel drive and will be available on well-equipped SEL and Limited models of the 2010 Flex, packaged with several high-demand customer features.

  • The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is the first in a wave of EcoBoost engines coming from Ford as part of a strategy to bring major fuel-efficiency improvements to millions.

  • The key to the EcoBoost system is the harmony between the twin turbochargers and the direct injection fuel system. The turbochargers recover energy from the exhaust that otherwise would’ve been wasted and put it back in the engine to gain efficiency.

  • By 2013, more than 90 percent of Ford’s North American lineup will be available with EcoBoost.

Quotes

“We are committed to delivering fuel economy leadership in every new vehicle. We do this with affordable technology that can be applied to the widest number of vehicles. EcoBoost is an important component of that goal. The beauty of EcoBoost is that it enables us to downsize for fuel efficiency, yet boost for power. We’re able to decrease the size of the available engine – such as installing a V-6 versus a V-8 – yet boost the power using turbocharging to deliver similar power and torque of that larger engine.”
- Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s Group President of Global Product Development

“We know that there are customers who are looking for the power and performance of a traditional V-8 but are not willing to sacrifice this for fuel economy. No one else in this segment offers this level of performance and versatility, and when you wrap it up in Flex’s unique package, we believe that it will offer a compelling buy in the crossover segment.”
- Kate Pearce, Flex Marketing Manager

Ford Leads with Most ‘Top Safety Picks’

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Ford Leads All Automakers with Most 'Top Safety Picks', Besting Honda in IIHS Crash Tests

2009 Ford Flex

Ford Motor Company has earned more "Top Safety Pick" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other automaker with a total of 16 to date. Ford surpassed its closest rival Honda this week when four of its 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – achieved “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford also has more 5-star government crash test ratings than any other automaker.

How They Get Picked

To earn IIHS’s "Top Safety Pick," vehicles must earn the top "good" ratings in the institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. An added requirement since 2007 is that vehicles also must offer electronic stability control.

Helping Drivers Maintain Control

Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the institute’s crash tests, and AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control is available for each vehicle. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When AdvanceTrac® senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help the driver keep the car tracking on its intended path. IIHS has stated that "AdvanceTrac significantly reduces crash risk by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers."

Structural Strength Is a Safety Fundamental

Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan get some of their core strength from the use of lightweight aluminum-coated boron steel – one of the strongest weld-able materials – in the body structure. The use of high-strength steel in the B-pillars is only part of their robust safety profile. Ford engineers also located the side door intrusion beams to help manage and absorb energy during side impact crashes.

Flex Aerodynamics

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Flex Design is Fuel Conscious

Flex Aerodynamics

Flex’s more square-shaped design cues surprisingly improve Flex’s aerodynamic performance, which translates to better fuel economy. To maintain 55 mph, the Flex needs only 8.90 horsepower while the nearest competitors in the full-size crossover segment – the GMC Acadia and Toyota Highlander – require more than 9.30 horsepower. Moreover, the Flex’s coefficient of drag is significantly better than all of its Asian competitors. Flex tests at 0.355 coefficient of drag while the competitors are at 0.375.

The Flex’s standout aerodynamics equates to one mile per gallon improvement in fuel economy. Overall, the Flex achieves 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 17 miles per gallon in city driving.

Some of the features that contribute to Flex’s aero advantage:

  • The more square-shaped design of the front bumper sweep and headlamps

  • Flex’s wide low-riding stance, which gave engineers the ability to reduce ride height by almost an inch for a ground clearance of 130 millimeters – the standard for most Ford cars.

Quote: “The overall design of the Flex, from its low-riding stance to its box-like body shape has actually worked to our aero advantage. Its low coefficient of drag amounts to significant gains in fuel economy.” Wayne Koester, Ford aerodynamic engineer.

Through the use of high-tech, computer-generated imagery, consumers who visit the Flex website through www.fordvehicles.com can now experience the Flex in ways that could never be achieved with traditional photography.

CAD Data Replaces Photography
Using CAD-based (Computer-Aided Design) engineering data, Ford has created three 60-second digital animations that give a completely virtual three-dimensional tour of the interior, exterior and safety features of the Ford Flex. A fourth animation on vehicle handling will launch later this summer.

“When you shoot a vehicle with regular photography, you are limited with what you can show,” said Scott Kelly, Ford digital marketing manager. “When you use CAD data you can show and do just about anything.”

According to Kelly, Ford leads the industry in its use of virtual technology.

“Other automakers are offering video displays or interactive 360-degree vehicle views,” he said. “But no one is using computer-generated imagery to the extent that we are.”

Sizing Up a Virtual Flex
The Flex Web site also features an interactive component that allows visitors to literally “size up” the Ford Flex. Using the online tool, viewers can line the Ford Flex up to different objects, such as people, parking meters, and other vehicles to get an idea of how big -- or small -- the vehicle actually is.

“One of the biggest misconceptions consumers have about the Ford Flex is that it is either too big or too small,” said Eric Peterson, Ford Communications. “This tool enables them to get a sense of its true size.”

MADE IN OAKVILLE

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

The 2009 Ford Flex is set to roll off the Oakville Assembly line.

Mark Fields At The 2009 Ford Flex Celebration

At the official launch ceremony on June 3, 2008, Ford announced that its Ford Oakville Assembly Complex (OAC) will be adding 500 new jobs to keep up with the demand for the popular Ford Flex, which arrives in dealerships this summer. Crossover vehicles are part of the fastest-growing vehicle segment in North American this decade.

With a portfolio that includes Ford Flex, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, Ford crossover growth in North American is the fastest in the industry for the last two years.

In the U.S., Ford Edge was the best-selling mid-size crossover in 2007 and is to date in 2008. In Canada, the crossover segment grew 89 percent in 2007 versus the previous year, and Ford of Canada sold more crossovers than any other manufacturer.

EasyFuel Capless Fuel-Filler System

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Ford makes filling up easier

2009 Ford F-150 FX4

The EasyFuel™ Capless Fuel-Filler System eliminates the gas tank screw cap for more simple fuel fill ups. No more gas odor on hands or gloves, or the unwanted amber dash light because the gas cap wasn't screwed on tightly enough.
In addition to eliminating these hassles, EasyFuel helps reduce evaporative emissions that create smog and contribute to global warming. Spring-loaded tabs pull back a flap in the filler neck when the pump nozzle is inserted. When fueling is complete, and the nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.

EasyFuel™ was introduced on the 2008 Ford Explorer. It will be standard equipment on the new Ford F-150, Flex and Lincoln MKS in 2009. The system will be offered on the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury product line by 2010.

NEW F-FAMILY SEATS DEBUT IN FORD FLEX

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

In-house seat design ensures comfort and quality.

2009 Ford Flex - Detail

Instead of outsourcing seat design, the automotive industry norm, Ford created a dedicated seat engineering team within its Body Engineering division. Three Ford engineers – Qin Pan, Joanna Rakowska and Michael Medoro – spent months working with sophisticated virtual technology to design in-house vehicle seating that maximized both comfort and quality.

For the Ford Flex, the objective was to reflect the quiet luxury of the interior by reducing seat vibration. Using real-world road surface data, the Ford engineers could design mass dampers to counter a variety of road surfaces far earlier than ever before in the development stage.

While the new in-house seating technology has immediate benefits for Flex customers, soon the acquired learning building the F-Family Seats will be applied to a range of Ford vehicles from the Ford Focus to the new Ford F-150.

FLEX’S “COOL” INNOVATION

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Flex’s new integrated fridge cools 40 percent faster than home refrigerator.

2009 Flex console

When designing the Ford Flex’s new in-vehicle refrigerator, Ford engineering created a cooling and freezing unit that not only performed as well as a standard home refrigerator, but was 40 percent faster. In freeze mode the refrigerator unit can chill two half-liter bottles of water from a room temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) to 41 degrees F (5 degrees C) in just two and a half hours.

While compact, the cooling unit holds seven 12-ounce cans, four half-liter bottles, two 20-ounce bottles or various fruits and vegetables. Hermetically sealed and well insulated, the refrigeration compartment keeps beverages or food cold, allowing no more than an 18 degree F (10 degree C) temperature rise over 175 minutes, just a few minutes short of three hours.

The Ford Flex’s new compressor-driven cooler offers customers the option of cooling or freezing, and eliminates the need for bulky post-purchase add-on refrigeration units. By maintaining the same outward console appearance with or without the fridge option, the Ford team designed a back seat console with no compromise to interior design integrity.

New York Fashion

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

URBAN ROOF ART

Flex roofs as creative canvas to create “Cool Lids” by NY artist Tristan Eaton

Tristan Eaton

Visitors to the New York International Auto Show were witness to a live art performance by street artist and commercial illustrator Tristan Eaton. Throughout the opening weekend Tristan Eaton, founder of the creative agency ThunderDog Studios, used the Flex’s White Suede roof option to create colorful urban art pieces.

Show-goers watched the 29-year-old transform three full-size, sheet metal stampings of the Flex roof. The resulting one-of-a-kind “Cool Lid” art pieces will be on display in Ford’s Flex Studio Gallery from March 21st to 30th, 2008, joining three other previous creations.

The Tristan Eaton event was designed to build on the concept that the Ford Flex is a highly adaptable crossover vehicle that can be customized through a range of factory options including nine paint colors, two-tone roof, all-wheel drive, a multi-panel Vista roof and many other personalized choices.

Anthony Prozzi Quote – Ford Flex

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008
"Look at how a person picks out a suit or a piece of furniture, reflects their personalities. If a person has a certain style about them, they don’t check it at their car door, it carries from their office to their wardrobe to their briefcase to their cell phone or PDA. The boundaries between automotive design, fashion, and industrial design are blurred."

Fashion Forward Flex

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Fashion designer Anthony Prozzi brings stylish new look to the Flex.

2009 Ford Flex - Fashion

As consumers become more and more sophisticated in their tastes, vehicles are no longer simply in the realm of mobility; today’s customers view vehicles as fashion statements that reflect their lifestyle. The Ford Flex is a convergence of form, function and fashion.

Former high-profile fashion designer, Anthony Prozzi, has drawn on his wealth of experience to create a luxurious upscale look for the Ford Flex. Working with the Ford design team, the New York born-and-bred designer, who has worked as a designer at DKNY and was also a contributing editor at W magazine, created a stylish interior with a fresh combination of colors, textures and materials that directly mirrors how we dress today.

The seating is one of the areas that Prozzi considers “Oscar winning.” Inspired by the timeless appeal of the tweed jacket, Prozzi incorporated a Harris tweed on the panels and seating fabric of the base model. For customers looking to show their appreciation for sophisticated fashion, the luxury model incorporates diamond perforated leather seating with stitching that connotes a fine pinstriped suit.

Another fashionable element in the Ford Flex is the center stack design, or cockpit integrated display – the low-gloss metallic paint gives it an understated elegance with just a bit of jewelry-inspired sparkle. To deliver on the concept that “space is the new luxury” Prozzi created a single visual line that traverses the vehicle’s interior, pushing out the surface and giving the Flex a horizontal flow.

Customer-Inspired Innovation

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

The Flex is loaded with innovative features.

2009 Ford Flex - Detail

The 2009 Ford Flex is designed with customer comfort in mind. That’s why there are numerous features that are exclusive to its crossover class – all of them inspired by customer demand.

A refrigerator that cools.
Mounted between the second-row captain’s chairs, this class-leading feature doesn’t just keep cool beverages cold, it can cool up to seven 12-ounce cans, four half-liter bottles or two 20-ounce bottles from room temperature to 41 degrees in just more than two-and-one-half hours.

Ambient lighting.
Flex owners can tailor program seven-color ambient lighting to their mood with the flick of a switch. Customers can change the lighting on two LEDs mounted on the front console, two on the footwells and two around the cup holders.

Capless fuel filler system.
Ford Flex owners will never again forget to put the gas cap back on after fueling. The capless filler system also provides a better seal, cutting down on smog-forming emissions.

Voice activated hands-free in-car communications.
The Ford Sync™ voice-activated, in-car communications and entertainment system allows for hands-free use of mobile phones and media players by the driver. An available voice-activated navigation system offers real-time traffic and weather information, a 23,000-song personal jukebox.

Sirius Satellite Radio with Travel Link™
Flex owners and passengers get up-to-the-minute information and entertainment content through Ford SIRIUS Travel Link’s uninterrupted, coast-to-coast coverage. Drivers can avoid highway and road congestion with real-time traffic flow and accident reports, or access fuel prices from over 120,000 gas stations. The SIRIUS Travel Link system also provides detailed weather information, sports scores and schedules, as well as movie listings from over 4,500 theaters.

Ford’s exclusive second-generation door-entry keypad.

Flex Seating

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Ample seating and storage for every situation.

2009 Ford Flex - Detail

The three rows of seats in the seven-passenger 2009 Ford Flex can be configured to meet any and all traveling needs. No matter how the interior space is used, there is always plenty of legroom, ensuring that no one travels “coach-class” in the Flex.

The interior of the Flex takes its inspiration from fashion and furniture design; stylish details include tweed-like seat fabric and inserts in a hounds-tooth pattern. The Flex isn’t just good-looking; the interior is all about comfort and convenience, too.

The second and third row seats are slightly higher than the one in front, meaning that the view is terrific from every seat. Flex owners can choose to get a second-row bench, or captain’s chairs, with or without a center console. Transporting large or bulky items? No need to worry; every seat (except the driver’s seat) folds flat, and even the footrest is stowable.

Quiet Confidence

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Ford Flex owners enjoy the sound of silence with a powerful ride.

2009 Ford Flex

Drivers and passengers will love that every aspect of the 2009 Ford Flex was designed with reduced noise and vibration in mind. The independent rear suspension system allows for better tuning, the 6-millimeter thick windshield cuts wind and powertrain noise, and specially selected tires make road sounds nearly unnoticeable.

Driving is a real pleasure with the powerful and confident road manners of the 2009 Ford Flex. The 3.5-liter, DOHC, 24-valve, 60-degree V-6 engine has more than 260 horsepower and 245 lb.-feet of torque. For drivers this translates into smooth driving and easy lane changes. This powertrain, including a six-speed transmission allows the Flex towing capacity exceeding 4,000 lbs. An available intelligent AWD system can anticipate wheel slip before it happens.
